I had my center crank bearing let go at the start of last season. It looked like fragments from the bearing retainer were sucked up the intake port and pitted the top of the piston and the cylinder head. I have been sanding the cylinder head with emery cloth and a Dremel tool, but it still looks king of ugly. Do you guys see any issues using this head?
Thanks, G.B.

I have used a head with damage like that before, i wouldn't worry too much about it. If you can find a cheap used head in good shape get it, but if not you can run that one in my opinion. I had several thousand miles on one like that in my old red '97 SX 700.

you could run it, just watch your jetting, it's got alot of surfaces to pre-ignite off of. if she gets too warm you're in for ping.
it'll cost you a couple of hp, but if you're not worried about that then you should be ok.

Thanks guys for your quick response. I have been afraid to remove too much material when smoothing out the nicks. Do you think I should leave well enough alone or should try and remove as much of the pitts as possible? Thanks, G.B.

if you dig much further you're gonna alter the CR fairly seriously. which might be good in that it'll help your pre-det problems, but again, it'll cost you power.

Thanks Junior. That's kind of what I thought. I guess I will have to see how my engine budget holds up and think about replacing the head. G.B.

that's a wise choice I think. It'll run as it is, shouldn't be an issue, but next time you're going to buy a mod, instead of getting reeds or a silencer, get a fresh head. Not a big deal. The important bit is that if we get hit with snow, you'll still be able to ride.

Great, thanks again Junior. G.B.
Run-it
As long as there isnt any steel embedded in the head, its not gonna hurt it one bit, will run just fine. Thats minor damage.

Thanks mrviper for your input. I have sanded the heck out of it with emery cloth and a Dremel tool with a sanding disk. There should not be any steel pc.s left in it. Thanks, G.B.
