I put a new throttle block on my SRX and now need to add a thumb warmer. I ordered a yamaha one, but one of the last things the instructions mention is that you should not wire this directly into an existing yamaha switch because the factory warmers are in an unregulated circuit.

I was actually thinking just the opposite. Could they be referencing older model yamaha's? I think I would be fine just cutting off the old plug and wiring the new warmer in, but I could be wrong.
 
TTT. Where are the electrical guys?

My theory is that the rheostat on the 02SRX for the thumb warmer will provide all the adjustment I need to wire this directly in and not overheat. I just don't know enough about an "unregulated" circuit to know if that is what I have and if it would be a problem.
 
As long as the heater element is the same resistance as the stock one, wiring it into the stock wires and using the rheostat would be no differnt at all then when it was on the yamaha lever.
 
Can I simply check ohms on each without them being plugged into anything? I guess I have never known how the internals of the thumb warmer work. If it is just based on resistance, I follow you and it makes sense that if they ohm out close to the same it will be fine.

I´m not an expert but I don´t understand the note about "unregulated circuit"(a language problem I think). I now a little about electricity, and when I look at the electrical drawings I see that the single headlight yamahas use a partno. 8AB 82970 thumb warmer and it´s wired throu the thumb warmer switch.But the twin light Yamahas uses a 8DN 82970 thumb warmer and the thumb warmer switch is only a control and the thumb warmer is power is adjusted from the CDI box. I think that if you have the 8DN 82970 thumb warmer, plug it in and it will work, but if you have the 8AB 82970 or any other thumb warmer You should be careful. (Check that you have the right partnumber)You can burn the CDI box (or maybe the yamaha people put a max current switch into it, I don´t now about this but better safe than sorry). Your Yamaha shop should advice about this but I think that a normal snowmobile mechanic is a exellent mechanic but lack some knowledge about electrical parts. (It´s the same in cars, motorcycles etc.) Hope that this will give you some clues how to proceed.

I would simply use a ohm meter and ohm the 2 out and see if they are the same reistance, all a thumb warmer consist of is a heat sink, a place for the wire to heat up. Do you know what part number warmner you have?

your not goinmg to get any help from a yamaha shop, they only know if the part numbers are right.

I think you have a good point ohm metering the warmers, but the ohms normally change with temperature maybe the ohms differ when warm? So I don´t now if that method is safe enough? but if snowdust get the warmer with the right number I think it will work. Sometimes stock parts work, sometimes aftermarket parts works. Sometime nothing works so I think a combination of dealer knowledge, friends knowledge and totallyamaha knowledge is the best. My own experience is that totallyamaha knowledge is the most acurate, (A little strange I think but maybe the dealers want us to leave our snowmobiles to them to tune?) They often can be a very good dealer, but when you look for performance. OK you can´t use your friends dragracing setup in your trail machine but you can learn from him(or her) how to set up your machine. They now how to tune engine and clutch. Experience is everything.
 
Alright. Here is the bad news:
Stock thumb warmer = 67 ohm
New thumb warmer P/N SMB-THUMB-WA-RM = 33 ohm

While I am at it I ohmed out the new Apex bars.
Stock hand warmers = 3.7 ohm
Apex hand warmers = 7.3 ohm

My theory based on this would be that I could cook the new thumb warmer and my hand warmers may not get hot enough. What do you guys think?
 
Alright. I just looked up that part number. I didn't realize I could get the thumb warmer separately. I think I am going to try to return the one I have and get that one. Any thoughts on the warmers though???
