First off welcome to the site!!!! This is the place to be if you ride any kinda of 2 SMOKE YAMI.
Find out if it has updated shocks all around cause the 02's came with extremely stiff shocks. Also find out if the fuel pump was serviced, cause they were known for freezing up on people.

Make sure drive shaft bearing have been replaced, if they have not they will go on you this year! Stator has been a common problem also, apparantley there was a updated one used in 2003.

- what length studs and see if any have hit the cooler and tunnel.

Hello
Unless you are getting this sled real cheap...I would hold out for a 03er or even a 04 viper s...I have a 03 with over 17,000 km's on it, with only one rebuilt, my fault of course ( did not service carbs one year which led to a meltdown) found most of my parts here & many great people here willing to help out...they are great sleds. I owned a 03 rx1 and after 12000 km's. I sold the rx1 and kept the viper, just love the twisties with it...this year I added a m-10 skid, looking forward to another great season...good luck with whatever viper your getting 'cause in my opinion they are truely one great sled...

All the above post are great. Diffently check the wire harness they do rub and a little tape cures the problem. It is a great reliable sled that is alot of fun.

a friend of mine owns a yamaha dealership and the 02 viper i am looking at is going to be a trade in on a new fx nitro all he told me so far was that he would sell it to me for his cost, under 3000.00 he said im thinking like 2500.00 , i did see the sled once a few nicks here and there but overall in good shape and allways dealer maintained, i think i will jump on this deal because vipers are rare around here plus it`s in my price range.

progold,
I have had SRX's and had an 02 viper...to make a long story short $$$$$ I sold my apex GT and am now going back to a viper or SRX. My 02 viper had an M-10 and Jerry Fix power sports king cobra kit. I loved the sled and regret selling it. the only down fall was the exhaust was load at about 30 miles an hour and I got terrible fuel mileage (8-10mpg). But both I blame on the kit.
I am going to look at an 02 Viper with an M10 suspension tomorrow. It has 3800 miles on it and looks great in the pics. They are asking 2995 for the sled. I will take 2,000 cash and see what they say. But, sleds around here may be selling for less than where you are since we don't get any snow and must trailer north to ride.
Good luck with your decision.

I love everything about the Viper BUT the STOCK rear suspension, so I took the plunge and bought a ExpertX skid for it. Havent had a chance to test it out with the new skid but all the things I hear, Im in for a real treat over the back breaking NO-ACTION. Reason I say back breaking is I rode my Viper 1500miles with NON-Updated shocks on MI trails. And if you ever ridden here you now the trails get real rough(2-4FT moguls).

Well guys like it or not i'm back on this side of the board... man am I going to catch shit for going back to a 2 smoke. I will say there are good and bad. I will miss the 4 stroke FI motor in the GT, the exhaust behind me and the lack of smell. But, I will not miss the way it handled, the monthly 216.00 payment, the worry about the chain case blowing up, lack of hand warmers and wind protection, worry about the track rubbing and the wire for the shock breaking. I will enjoy the ride of the M10 and the handling of the viper...also the red one is touch looking. I was only able to get them down to low book of 2700 bucks but, with the M10 and the sled in like new condition it's worth 2700. The compression was about 135 on the PTO side and 145 on the other 2. Now I just need to figure out what clutch kit to put in it. I think I will e-mail richie rich.

You should be able to get 6700-7000 for your apex. I will never ever ever buy a brand new sled again. I paid 10,200 for my apex, rode it 1450 miles and sold it for 6750 (3450 dif) But 216.00 a month times for 22 months 4752 that's 3.27 per mile before fuel for the sled and truck, oil, filter, carbides etc...
I see you have an 01 SRX I was debating between getting a Viper or SRX. 01 & 02 SRX's are not very easy to find. Now I am pumped and ready for snow!!!

I hope to get $6,700-$7,000 for it,but no luck yet. I paid $10,200 for mine also. Yes I have a 02 Viper and 01 SRX,I ride the Viper trail riding and boondocking and the SRX is just for drag racing. I think I will always ride 2-strokes now.rhoag said:You should be able to get 6700-7000 for your apex. I will never ever ever buy a brand new sled again. Interesting info. You guys are making me feel good about the fact that I will be riding my "old" Viper for quite a few more seasons to come!
If I had the coin the Nyto RTX would be tempting, but I just can't find any reason to part with my lil' snake. It's paid for, runs like a clock and is still one of the best looking sleds on the snow. I fully understand and appreciate all of the 4-stroke advantages, but it will be a long time before the $10,000 price tag outweighs a good Viper for me. Where I'm at in this sport, I can put a mono/m10/Re-Action under mine, add a nice used 02-'-04' ER for the wife and put them both in an enclosed inline for that kind of coin!
Here's to a darn good sled!
