I need some advice, I just bought a 2001 sxr 700, my brother has a 02 viper (amazing sled) I want to do some mods to my sxr in order to try and keep up to him. The sxr has a 1.25 ripsaw but is other wise stock. What clutching should I do? Is the airbox mod recommended? Should I do the reed notch or install spacers? Any help would be great. BTW the sled has 6000 miles on it.
The sled MUST remain reliable!

Reed notch, remove 1 layer head gasket, silencer mod and try to find some 8CA weights and a set of tripple pipes. Then you can have some fun with your Bro.....

Reliable

I think you should make the reed spacer and silencer mod, and head gasket mod if you have good fuel in your area.
And buy a set of quick rods, they will make a good improvment in your performance(you have to get the power down to the ground). A word about reability(as you mention it), I was mechanic in a snowcross team and the problems we had with the yamahas was w-arm, trailing arms, center shock lower mount and control rods. most problems will not show on a normal used sled. Exept the w-arm who is a nown problem and maybe the trailing arms. Inspect this areas for cracks (your service shop normal don´t have the time to look close at this) I hope you will be happy with your new sled, Iám going to put sxr dampers on my 01 srx to build the perfect sled.

Triple pipes will give you exellent power, but it all depends of how much money and work you want to put into it. The small adjustments will give you very much power for little work , and the triple pipes will give you some more work and time. It all depends of how much time or money you want to use you want to spend. And of course your knowledge, I don´t now much about this. If you are a normal snowmobile user you will be happy with the small mods, if you are a hardcore full trottle user go for the triple pipes

Check out the tech pages, reed notch, silencer mod, clutching all work great. If that isnt quite enuf, search for some Bender tripple pipes, and then perform the required clutching. I didnt do the head gasket mod, as gas is sometimes an issue and i heard conflicting reports of the airbox mod on flatland sleds, making it tempramental. I have 6500kms on my bender pipes and a total of almost 11000 kilometers on my sx 700, and i still cant wait to ride it again.Watch your waterpump for leaks, the seals do tend to let go after a few years, antifreeze on the bellypan or under the waterpump is a sign to replace.Repaired and broke the proaction rear suspension too much for my liking and replaced with an Zr900 and one of the best mods yet, also ditch the stock skis and peplace with a nice pair of aftermarket, unless you like snow in the face .Congrats on the sled and have fun.

Its not overly loud, but there definitly is a commanding tone from doing the mod. I did the exhaust mod, added reed spacers, and did BETHEVIPERs suspension mod and I actually could not believe the speed I gained. The fastest I ever had before was 105 on radar. Last year I was getting 109 and taking rev 600's. That never happened before.

Here is exactly what to do on that sled.
142.5 main jets right across
lower needles 1/2(move 1 plastic shim from bottom of clip to the top)
silencer mod
reed spacers
change inner rivet froma 3.6 gram to a 4.5 gram
get a rx-1 helix & run it at 60 degree wrap
I am very close to you(Brandon)
& have set up a lot of those sleds including a few of my own.

Can't go wrong with turks set up - that's what I used on my wife's 700 - it rips!

I would look for a bored muffler - they are pretty loud and you may not like it. I removed mine after doing it and it was tough to find one that wasn't bored. They are quite a bit louder than stock and people do notice it.

Hey how are your mods coming, I just bought the same sled and purchased most of the things you are doing so, let me know how its all coming together...

Turk im going by the spec in the tech section for my SX 700.

stock weights, 3.1g rivets in inner hole, 4.5 in outter, 2-3 engagement shims, 2 layers from head gasket, 140 main jets, 22 top gear, 51/43 helix

notch reeds, muffler mod

is this good^^^

The 97-99 700 sx set up is completely different then the 00-02 700 sx-r. the clutching is way different!!!

I have done everything except for the carb jets and needles. I will be pulling the skid this week to change the sliders and give it a good look over and greasing. I am going to try a 48-42 helix since I already owned one, keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a 51-43 but they seem to be very popular.
First two or three inches I will try it out in the back field to see how she goes.
LET IT SNOW!!!!!

Good deal, I did the reed notch, bored silencer, head gasket mod, as well as the air box mod, and have the 51/43 helix on the way with the drop brackets so im pumped....

FREE mods that work.....remove the middle layer of head gasket, reed notch and bored silencer. You will notice an immediate difference.
Inexpensive mods.....a little clutching will go a long way. Multiangle helix $40, rivets $10.00, maybe new springs, $35.00 the performance differnce...priceless.
If you really want to spend more then pipe it and port it.
A well tuned SXR can give you 140 to 150HP
