I have a chance to pickup a 01 srx. Owner says it needs a track and hood has a scratch or two. Anyway, not sure what to look out for. I thought I read the W arms or something like that in the rear suspension. Any other problem areas to watch out for? It has 4000 miles. Not sure how long they are good for before refreshing. Is s$1700 a fair price?

I would shoot $1,500 at him.
I would get the sled and get a track for it in the classifieds. You can get a good used track for $150 and under in the wanted section of the classifieds.
You can get a complete set new of piston rings for about $60 and gives you the oppertunity before the snow comes along to see what else it needs, meaning in doesnt hurt to replace the wrist pin bearings either for example.
the reason why people break W-arms is because they tighten up the limiter straps up front and do not release spring pressure on that front shock which puts alot of pressure on that joint on the W-arm or just plain beat the hell out out a sled that was made for running the flats and lakes not ditch banging. Just check the joints where the front rear shock mounts up and if there is no evidence of cracking or damage, its probably good to go.
These sleds are horrible on hyfax. simple solution for you, the sled has 5.125 idler wheels up front. Just get some 5.38 wheels from richierich to put up front and you will cure that problem. Just be sure to loosen the track a few turns to compensate for the larger wheels. You will need 4 of them up front. you will just have to use the busingings from the wheels that are on there.
Hope this helps

tomseal6, just curious what you thought about the addition of hyfax saver wheels like those at Pioneer Performance. Would they essentialy do the same thing? Just asking because I'm pulling my rear skid for shock & track upgrades & was considering this option. (sorry for the hijack)

These sleds are not horrible on slides. They will wear quickly to a point and then stop wearing. They will lasrt for many seasons.
Do a search on here and you will find all you need to know about SRX's. Use 91 octane gas and a good full syn oil. Check your Power valves and make sure they are not pulled out and clean them once or twice a season depending on the miles traveled.

I had to change my hyfax after the first 500 miles af TRAIL riding and that was right out of the crate!! I bought the sled brand new. I took my 02 SRX up to a Muni ride last seaon with my 5.38 wheels on including my hyfax saver small wheel kit and had absolutlely ZERO hyfax wear. sled seems to roll down the trail better too..

I had the hyfax saver wheel kit on before I put the larger diameter 5.38 wheels on just as an extra precaution.
Yes, those wheels should do the same thing as long as they are larger diameter than the stock 5.125
People refer to them as polaris wheels because thats what wheels come on polaris sleds from the factory.
I buy from richierich because I know him and have met him in person and he gives good deals. his customer service is excellent and very friendly. I feel like I am just a number to somebody else..

S.X. and I did the swap at his house last January when I was home. It was a good time. He helped me out a great deal. I had lunch with him a few weeks ago when I was home and cant wait to ride with him this year.

tomseal knows what he is saying on all points. For two years in a row I went through three sets of slides in 1,000 to 1,200 miles. Some went clear through lightly skuffing the aluminum. Last year I put on a low snow wheel kit and 4 Polaris wheels up front and ran all winter--1,600 miles-- on one set of slides. Only thing I can ad is the wire loom under the engine issue. I've not had the problem with mine but, I've seen a lot of discussion on TY about it. Up dated Viper shocks do wonders for the ride.
tomseal also sells good used tailight lenses. I baught one from him last year and it went the 1,600 miles with no issues just like my slides

Last year my srx darted bad and would eat the sliders off in 100 miles. I read all the info on here and did just what these guys told me to do , and my srx is perfect . Listen to these guys and they will tell you everything you need to know to cure any problems. If it wasn't the knowledge of these experts on here I would have sold that sled. Even Yamaha dealers here couldn't help me. These guys are a god send ! Dana

regarding the motor
can't beat it for a two stroke
beats most bigger displacement twins and much smoother with the balance of triple cylinders. and you can not beat the exhaust tone.
corners on rails, and if you want more suspention, add the viper shocks to the rear for $200 used which many have done ( it's not a skidoo rev ride by any means, but not $5000 either) and will smoke any rev in any twisties ( like take your helmet off and wait for them to catch up)
$1700 for a 2001 srx seems a very good price, as many change out tracks for 1" lugs as a given anyway.

they have more stroke, longer travel, same skid. softer ride, better handling in the rough stuff. like it says above, not as good a ride as alot of sleds but the shocks make much better. you will be amazed just how fast a clutched, stock srx is. adding long travel shocks to it will slow it down a few mph on the lake but is well worth it everywhere else. if you bought it to just play on the lakes, leave it low. if your going to ride it on the trail add atleast longer shocks if not another skid, m10, expert, mono, or even an edge, or skidoo skid.
