Well what started out as an engine rebuild after I lost a crank bearing on my first trip last year has ended up being a lot more. Here is what I working on.

Engine:
New crank bearing (CB Performance replaced bearing)
New OEM pistons and rings
Install engine torque limiter
SLP silencer

Shocks:
I am going to send all 4 shocks to Pioneer Performance and have them re-valved.

Skid:
Replace one bad idler wheel
Replace one bad idler wheel bearing
Add control rod hand adjust nuts
Polish rails

Misc:
Polished tunnel
Built seat riser 1 1/2" front, 3" rear
Blue snow flap
Relocate battery

I think that is everything?????????

How many miles were on it when the bearing let loose? Was it a sled error or poor storage or something else. First I have heard of a engine failure that was mostly stock.

Kinger, It had just over 7,000 miles on it when the bearing went. It was all stock and never touched. I am the 2nd owner and the sled was never fogged.

I consider myself pretty lucky. I know there are a bunch of Yamaha's around here with more miles on them than that and some like Viperking's that lost a bearing at 2,000 miles. Or my riding buddies 02 Poo 600 XC SP with 2,000 miles that lost a rod bearing.

Wow ok that is plenty of miles. Think fogging it would have saved it or just plain wore out? Nice job on the 'resto' of sorts. I'm in the middle of my RX1 right now.

I think fogging might of helped. The center rod was kind of orange from what looked like rust stains. CB Performance checked the other crank bearings and they all checked out. I think I will fogg from now on. In addition, the top end was tired and probably a matter of time before I had issues there as well. G.B.
 
fogging is the key. the mosture just sits in there and starts to rust the bearings and then you have Phawked engine. I've seen Yamaha with 16,000kms on the original engine.
 
It is finally coming together! New OEM pistons, rings, and gaskets in the engine. Completely rebuilt skid. New bushings, hand adjust nuts for the control rods, all new 7" wheels and new bearings in all 5" wheels, polished rails. Hopefully the motor will go back in the sled tomorrow and all four shocks will be shipped out to Pioneer on Monday. G.B.

It is slowly coming together. The motor is in the sled. Cooling lines are attached, some of the electrical connections are complete, the engine torque limiter mount is installed.

I next need to bleed the oil pump and clean the carbs.

Pioneer Performance is finishing up the re-valving of my shocks. They received my shocks last Friday and I was told they were going to be finished today and shipped out. That is fantastic service!

I am really getting anxious to hear the motor run again. Soon I hope. G.B.

My completely rebuilt skid is in with shocks re-valved by Pioneer. This skid has all new bushing, new 7" wheels, new bearings in the 5" wheels, hand adj nuts on control rods, and polished rails.

I am hoping my clutch alignment tool comes in before the holiday. Once I align the clutch and motor I can bolt on the carb rack, power valves, and exhaust. Then I am down to cable adjustments and coolant before I can start the new motor.

I really want to hear it run....... G.B.

Thanks Kinger and viper7mi! It was kind of cool riding other brand sleds last year, but I really missed my Viper.

viper7mi, would Faygo Rockin Rye work?

I've got just under 20,000 klm's on my 02 that I purchased noncurrent in 03 and the motor has never had a wrench to it other than cleaning valves and carbs.I drive the supreme crap out of it,but I do look after it.It never gets stored without fogging it and it never leaves the garage in the fall without cleaning the carbs.I would lay money that if that motor had been fogged it would be still running.If it had spit out a bearing in the middle of the winter I would say it was something else,but 1st or 2nd time out definitely moisture sitting in the brg over the summer.
