Studding a Mnt. Viper.

For a special 2K mile run this February, I am down sizing from a 2” 144 to 1.25” on a Mnt. Viper and want to put some studs on it. Obviously I need tunnel protectors but do I need front , rear or both cooler protectors?. I did a search on the topic but nothing pertains to the Mnt. Viper. I was going to put on around a 100 or so studs down the middle. I have a track already (Camo 1602-130) and it is notched above the clips. My questions are…….
Front, back or both?
Part number for protectors? (Found front only on Yamaha page SMA-8CR31-12-01 $71.95?)
Length of studs?
Type of studs and backers? (Precautionary for river overflow and glair ice)

it is always a good idea(and sometimes a must) to have the protectors in place with studding. the mountain sleds have drop brackets in the rear with the 11.5 " trav so the chance of the studs coming in contact with the rear exchanger while the suspension is fully compresed is almost nil. as for the front , your sled is running 8 tooth drivers(compared to 9 tooth on non mountain sleds) thus moving the track further away from the front exchanger. so i would think you would be fine running without the protectors on both ends. you only concern would be if the track decided to come apart then you have nothing there to keep the studs from shredding the heat exchangers!! someone else may be able to chime in and give their opinion because i am not positive on this. but i think i am correct.keep in mind gents, he will be running a 1.25" track.

Hey thanks. Good news about heat exchangers clearance. Anyone have inputs about studs and type or backers? I have never ran studs.

IMHO it would not be a bad idea to run the protectors someone has some around for cheap

Hey Doc,
Good point about having those protectors there.
The ride I talk about is trail breaking for the Yukon Quest dog sled race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse. It's a 1000 miles each way.
