a coworker of mine has a 98 700 srx that has broke the same valve at the stem allowing the valve to slide down and bind up the piston. now mind you this dosen't happen every 500 mi it's happened twice in about 3 years. he claims to motor is ported but i dont see a connection there. any ideas.

he is not cleaning his valves often enough.. chances are he is runnng Yamalube or some other cheap oil... you need clean them before every season and use a good oil. You can spot weld the end of the power valve and try and use it again.. Porting would have no connection to the power valves

There's stops in the chamber also that prevents the valves from reaching
the piston, i don't see how this is happening..

well either someone ground out the stop when porting it too far there or the cables are adjusted too tight and your bottoming out the valave in the housing causing the ends to pull thru and drop the valve.

this guy owned his own shop and is a yamaha tech and he is baffled by this. and yes the valve will reach the piston in his sled the piston just about cut the valve in two. but on another note he pulled the valve, pulled the head off and cleaned out any debris stuck it back together and kept riding the rest of the weekend. by the way this was last year late in the spring and they were at camp in danforth me.

then someone got too happy with a grinder and ground away the stop when porting the exhaust port, this is how its hitting the piston.

^^ right, something's up because yamaha designed it NOT to do that, when i had my PV's out last year they where clearly there,i could not push it in far enough to hit the piston, no matter how hard i tried...
