I have a 97 600 SX twin that I think had a ring spin and catch the exhaust port. I spent the time and money to rebuild the engine. I ended up swapping out the jug with one that was re-nikasiled. After all that I rode about 15 miles and loss of compression. I tore into this summer and the same thing the ring caught on the exhaust port.
I purchased another sled in the mean time due to a great deal on a 99 SRX 700. I still like my 600SX because it was piped, clutched and a lot lighter than the SRX.
My question is now that I know that it was probably ring spin that caused both of these failures. What can I do? Is there a fix for ring spin. I worried that if I put the thing back together again or have someone else do it the same thing will happen. Any ideas?
Thanks

Did you replace the piston along with the rings? If so did you use an OEM or Wiseco Piston?

Did you use the updated pistons(1998 )?
the pin in the piston that holds the ring from spining falls out breaks what
ever and alows the ring to spin and catch the port

Unfortunately I used Kimpex pistons - I guess I should have stuck with the OEM pistons and rings. I'm a little gun shy now about rebuilding after two failures.

use the up-dated pistion oems and use a good oil and it should run a long time get pistons from a 1998 sx600

id like to find a twin just to have..... is there much of a difference from the old 600 twins to the new ones?

^ little HP increases yes, the porting was a little better in the new one's.Dave_Vmax600 said:id like to find a twin just to have..... is there much of a difference from the old 600 twins to the new ones?
^Yup if you do it again take your time check your tolerances and use ONLYSilver Bullet said:Unfortunately I used Kimpex pistons - I guess I should have stuck with the OEM pistons and rings. I'm a little gun shy now about rebuilding after two failures.
OEM parts, and you should be good to go..
Reason for pin failure
My suggestion (although not necessarily an expert) is that you consider what is causing the pin failure. Those motors are prone to detonation which can cause pin failure when the piston itself is compromised. Did you check the condition of the crank during your rebuild? This is a stupid one but I'll ask it anyway, did you install the pistons the right way?
I had the same failure on a 600 V-max that I had a big bore kit in. Bad gas and detonation were blamed for the pin failure but we will never know for sure.

First of all thanks everyone for your help. That's why I love this place! We did make sure the pistons were absolutely correct - First thing I checked on the second investigation. We looked over the crank we did not mic the rods or runout. Crank bearings were good, no noise or looseness felt.
If it was detonantion what can I do. At the time I was still running premix in the tank plus the oil injection through break in. I was up and down on the throttle careful not to leave it at 1 rpm too long.
Am I just too gun shy now with the two failures or should I be looking for a replacement engine/or part out. I'm worried if I rebuild again the same thing will happen.
Thanks

One thing to worry about running pre-mix is to make sure you don't put too much oil in the gas or you will actually lean out the engine.
I would rebuild it and make sure to check the cylinder to make sure it is within tolerance if not replate or bore over. <- This is VERY IMPORTANT if the cylinder is oversize you will have compression and or ring failures.
Just watch it after the rebuild check your plugs and you should be all right.
Get Either OEM or Wiseco Pistons I would recommend doing both sides the same.

check you ring end gap very closely. If you reused the same pistons, maybe the pin is gone. On my sled, I'd only use oem parts. Maybe get a hold of pro116, he lives by you, and know how to do a rering job. he may help you out for peice of mind. Maxdlx

All good advice but the Wiseco part, stick with OEM!!!!!!!braindead1684 said:One thing to worry about running pre-mix is to make sure you don't put too much oil in the gas or you will actually lean out the engine.

OEM is good but Wiseco is in my opinion Just as good or better, and a little cheaper price wise. I will leave it at that.
if you use wiseco bore the cylinder to the piston for clearances
