I keep hearing good things about a Poloris P85 primary clutch on a Viper (10mile/hr track speed gain). Mine is a 2004 MNT Viper with some mods.

Is there anyone out there running this setup. Input is appreciated.

No way

I don't believe you will see that kind of track speed gain as a result of going to a Polaris clutch. The Yamaha clutch is a very good clutch. Save your money and spend it on some different weights, rollers and springs. Just my 2 cents. Why don't you send a PM to Turk or MRVIPER700 and ask them this question....they are the clutching experts around here.

Thanks for the input, I'll do that. The sled has Heavy Hitter weights, but I'll have to wait till the snow flys to set it up for me as the previous owner of the sled is smaller than me by about 50-60 lbs.

Ah yes!

You can give the heavy hitters a try but I think they suck. There is nothing aggressive about that profile. Opinions vary on those weights....of course. I believe Ryan (PRO116) had some good luck with Heavy Hitters. Mine are in the box on the shelf. I have had good luck with 8dn-20's and Heel Clickers in my Viper. When we get a lot of powder (which is rare) I really like 89l's in my viper.

i have run the heel clickers, polaris primary and the heavy hitters. i found the heavy hitters were really good. the polaris primary i couldnt get to run for shit, but i didnt spend that much time on it. and the heel clickers ran very very well.

The big difference between the yamaha and polaris primary is the final ratio. The yamaha will not fully shift as the sheaves hit before the belt reaches the top. You have to get a speed ring or machine the sheaves. As I have read on here in the past there have been mixed views about speed rings and machining the primary, I have yet to try either but I'm sure some fine tuning is in order. I asked the question over a month ago about a polaris primary on an ER viper, doesn't look like it will work so I may machine mine. If I go this route I will report back.

the speed rings put the clutching into overdrive, not 1:1. remember, it doesnt matter so much that the belt reaches the top as long as the secondary has the belt at the same distance from center to keep it in 1:1

I'm new to yamaha clutching so maybe you can answer this. With a stock yamaha primary fully shifted is this 1:1 or less. It was my understanding that a stock yamaha primary would not shift 1:1 and the secondary would shift 1:1 or do both shift to a 1:1 ratio in stock form and the speed ring or machining allow overdrive.
thanks

Machine them

All you have to do is take 50 thousanths off the very bottom of the clutch sheaves. Been there, done that.......it's not worth it.
