This is a recipe for definite burn down!!! NEVER modify the air box on a stock carbed aftermarket piped phazer !!! The best mod you could do at this point is to install a set of flatslide carbs from a 500 or 600 vmax.
 
haha i have a gutted airbox and cold air kit on mine and it is fine.


where can you get SX pistons btw?

next summer im doing a full engine rebuild on the phazer.

i wanted to replace..

rings, pistons, all bearings and maybe do slide carbs.

plus im doing skid bearings unless i find a used decent skid for cheaper.

Sx pistons are a do it yourself mod. The specs are available on the web. Basically opening up the intake side of the pistons to allow more mixture in the case.
 
i remember hearing that the 84 phazer out of the earlydesign was the fastest phazer yamaha built.something about the y pipe .anyone?

You need to read my post again, I said "on a stock carbed AFTERMARKET PIPED phazer" You are still running a stock pipe so maybe you can get away with it ! put on that Aaen pipe you are trying to find and run it like that and I'll give that motor maybe 15 miles before it burns down. BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!! Stock Phazer mid range A/F ratio is on the very lean edge to begin with, put on a pipe and gut the air box without riching up the mid range enough and so long pistons !! The stock carbs can be reworked to richen up the mid range a bit but if you really want to make the sled right, flat slides are the way to go. Maybe you should go to Dynotech research web site and read all about it if you don't believe me !! Also as for pistons get a set of wiseco as they come with the SX spec cut. Just make sure you tell the machinist that you are using Forged pistons so he gives the bores the extra Clearence needed for piston growth.

Take Phazer95's advice and suscribe to Dyno-tech. It only costs about $20 a year and there is a TON!!! of info on the Phazer engines in there. It was a very long lived engine and they have done many tests on them over the years. There are tests that include stock, mods, pipes, combinations, carbs, pistons heads etc. There are specs for jetting, piston cutting, head shaving, etc and dyno sheets to prove the results. EVERYTHING you are looking for is there in black and white and at your disposal when you need it. It is probably the best bang for the buck when it comes to data that you will find.

Do you have much experience with mod Phazers ? I am guessing NOT!! I have, and a gutted air box is a bad idea when using Mikuni butterfly carbs and a aftermarket pipe !!!
Please elaborate on why you think I am on crack. I can not wait to hear your oh so intelligent reply. :rofl:
 
my buddy ran a fully modded phazer

501 big bore, race porting, cold air kit and gutted air box, thin head gasket, milled head, vforce reeds, aaen single pipe.

stock butterfly carbs....obviously jetted.

ran mint never a problem.
 
Update..... it now has stock 1994 Vmax 500 flatslides and the 500 jetting..... hope this is close for a starting point ?

dude - that is a sweet phazer - looks awesome - nice work reviving a classic and giving it a nice update. I'm building one for my daughter next fall! Can you post what you did for the skis and seat and stuff like that? Awesome job!!!

Glad you guy's did the right thing !! You will be very happy with reliability of that combo. Would of been a shame for such a nice sled to be plagued with piston burndowns over the decision to keep the stock carbs !!

Glad to hear it, Must of only been ran at wide open throttle. Let me guess.... It is used as a 500ft. grass drag sled !! It sure would not be a good trail sled with that race gas only set up !!
 
just curious why the phazer was such a dog? my friends 340 enticer can stay with the 485 phazer! a 32 hp enticer staying up with a 56 hp phazer doesnt make much sense. the race really depends on which sled gets the deeper snow. is this a normal occurance?
