I just purchased my wife a 97 Vmax 600XTC with elec start and rev. Anything I need to check out on it and what has been the best value in a mod that you've done to it? Has it been a good sled for you?

Check the compression and make sure the oil pump is working good. The oil pump went on mine and had to rebuild the motor two seasons ago. Since then I"ve had no problems other than waiting for snow.lol I put all new exhaust gaskets, airbox cover, cowl foam, painted the pipes, sanded & painted the tunnel, fixed the seat snaps and cleaned it from top to bottom. I bought new skid shocks, studded track, bearings etc and taking it next weekend to have it done and get the clutch setup or rebuilt. Anybody else would think I"m nuts putting this money into an old sled but I like the old girl and the sound of the twin. The other half keeps blowing my doors off with her Rev so maybe that"s what keeps me going. ( jk ) Enjoy the sled and ride safe!

Put a thin headgsket in it, use the clutch setup from the Techpage. Find a used set of plastic skis,, the stockers are useless. The pic in my avatar is my 97 XTC with electric start and reverse. I did the mods I listed, and installed GYTR all-purpose skis. Also added a 1" predator with no studs, Pioneer Performance revalved shock's ,and Yamaha Mirrors. The oil pump WILL fail, but when they do, they fail at full oiling. The pistons had an issue with the oil ring retaining pin falling out. Not trying to scare you, but with 8500+ miles on mine, I've seen most if not all of the issues these sleds have. I have 2 of these, and the other is all stock. I let newbies and the kids ride this one because it rides great, is warm, and won't let them do anything to stupid LOL. Enjoy your new to you ride.

My 98 600 XT I installed reed spacers, removed one layer from the head gasket, it runs great and seems to have better gas mileage now. One of the greatest improvements was installing a 1.25 ripsaw track.
