I have a 94 vmax 600. I am putting on bar risers and found the oil injection cable is too short. I am going to remove the oil pump and oil tank and run premix fuel. I was thinking 40:1 should be fine with Yamalube oil. I have always run 40:1 in my YZ 250 dirt bike with good results.
With premix I will know the motor is getting the proper oil mixture, and also reduce a bit of weight from the sled.
Any comments would be good.

Do you always ride/play in the same areas? The only reason why I'm saying this is, if you need to refuel and don't have any pre-mixed fuel or oil with you you're basically screwed. This WILL force you to have to mix it in the tank which is NOT a good idea because you may suck up straight oil into the fuel pump then into the carbs which may lead you to being stranded. BUT, its your call. I would think that You should be able to find a cable for a mountain sled that will help accomodate you with putting a set of risers on your bars. T
^yeah I wouldn't take the oil injection off. It's a real pain in the a$$ premixing all the time.

50:1-40:1 would be fine, but don't remove it, pre-mix will be a pain in the **s!!!
I think the oil pumps are fairly trouble free, but when they go wrong it cost you a motor. I have always thought less moving parts the better.
I have a Mountian Max cable that will give the required extension, and will fit may Vmax.
The other issue with Vmax oil injection is they use a huge amount of oil. My pump is set to the factory spec from the manual, and the thing uses a ton of oil. The machine runs fine but will go through a 1/2 a resevour of oil per tank of gas. Not sure what the ratio is, but it must be rich on the oil.
I'm not a tree hugger, but could my part cutting down on the amout of oil we dump through these emission pigs. Not to mention the extra cost I would save on oil.
Premixing gas is not that bad. All my other junk takes premix (weedeater, boat, dirt bike).
Where we ride you will not find a gas station. If you run out of gas, you will only be found by a hiker in the summer.
Thanks

Sounds like you got your mind made up....good luck.

No not really. I do like the ease of just dumping in gas don't get me wrong. The sled is not a usual trail Vmax. It has been converted to a mountain sled with a 159" track, air ride rear custom suspension, bar risers, twin pipes.
I call it my mountain sled on a budget. It really performs great and I don't have any complaints.
However would be nice to run a bit cleaner on the oil. It would also be nice to shed a few pounds from the sled. Not too many areas you can trim weight on these old sleds.
Thanks for the replies.

Just replace the pump, they do go bad somtimes, replace it and set it
to the lean side of the lines and it will be fine, all my sleds sip oil..
just find a good used one or new....when bad they got to full stroke
(full oil flow),that may be whats wrong with yours..
