2000 and up cranks had updated bearings. They are bigger and will not fit in the journals on the 98-99. Remember the update in 2000??? the problems they had with crank failures in the 98 and some 99's???? I think there are some other differences but please...
dont buy a 2000 and up crank it will not work...

It's cause I'm putting a bender 835 together but I think my 99 crank might be worn out. And i have a 200 bottom end. I thought I could save a few bucks and swap cranks. Oh well I'll just send my crank out for rebuilding and buy another srx 2000-2001 for my spare crank. lol

The crank is the same except for the PTO bearings, you can switch the bearings and drop it right in, no problem.

Good info 800.
I didnt know you could swap the bearings out with the newer ones.
I am not sure on the cost of the bearings. but I heard they are around $100 a piece????
What do you think is better? Buying the bearings and paying for labor to rebuild the crank, or buying a used crank
If you decided to buy the updated bearings, you might as well get the crank welded since you have it out

theres a bit more to it then just changing the bearing
the 2000 and newer has a differt PTO stub end(bearing surface) on the crank as the bearing is 1 wide unit where s the 98-99 uses 2 smaller side by side bearings and has a groove in the middle for the race, also the pindowels are differnt for the case.

List price in Ontario at a dealer for those duplex bearings is about $255.00. Doh!

As I said before, the cranks are the same except for the PTO main bearings. The PTO crank end on a 99' and a 2000 are the same part number. 8DF-11412-01-00. This swap has been done numerous times.
For those of you who care to know. That means you can put any SRX or Viper crank in either of the two as long as the PTO bearings match the case. Been there, done this, I even put a Viper crank in a 98 SRX.
Now I haven't measured this personally, but. I had a friend call me, he wanted to put an 01' crank in a 99', I told him he had to change the PTO bearings. He called me back and said "why do I have to change the sleeves on the crank, they are the same size?". I told him if they are the same size you don't have to. So he slid the 2 bearings on the one piece sleeve, worked perfect.
So to answer Gates' original question, yes, the crank will fit, and if your 2 old PTO bearings are still good, slide them on and drop it in.
Also, we're all aware of the press fit issues with the earlier cranks. Therefore, welded or not, the newer crank is a better crank to start with.

the 1998 pto stub is part number -11412-00-00, the 2000-02 stub is part number 11412-01-00.
I dont know the diameter of the 2000 stub off hand but to fit a 1 peice bearing on a 98 2 peice race stub wouldnt be very good in my opinion, the 98 for sure is a 2 peice bearing race(inner) as seen in the pic.
Update:I went and did some reading and in the 99 tech update manual yamaha did change the crank stub end on a 99 crank, it is the same part number as a 2000 up, 98 differnt, 99 the same. The 98-99motors still use 2 seperate bearings in thier case but if the bearings match the case It could be swapped. I never paid much attention to the stubs other then I remebered the bearing race having the groove in them. So if you have a 1999 only it could be done, 1998 your out of luck!

I have a 99 crank and a 2000 crank. So to put the 2000 crank in a 99 case I need to buy the 99 pto bearings. And then get them intalled. How much would it be to buy a new crank or get this one rebuilt, I would'nt even know where to send it. How much did you want for your crank Don.
Thanks alot for the info guys.

Gates, I would need about $375 for the crank, its been trued and welded, perfect bearings.
The price given by srx2000 is a great price if the cranks are trued and welded after assembly, all comes down to the quality of the work on cranks, but the price is good for the labor. The parts are not cheap on the cranks, it all depends on the amount of work you need done.

The place that does Yammi Canada's warranty work (no name's mentioned) is like $600Can for a rebuilt crank last year, and I had to get 3 before I got one done right. In their defence, I believe one was damaged by UPS. 3rd one was the charm finally!! Oh BTW, that price is without bearings!!! I think the offers you have here are much better!

Gates, my point was you don't need to buy anything. If your 2 pto bearings are in good shape just slide them on your 00 crank. Nothing "needs" to be installed. You could buy new ones if you want to. Take your 2 cranks and measure the OD of the pto bearing race, it will be the same.
As Don pictured, the 98 99 cranks had 2 seperate bearings with 2 seperate races, if you look at your 00 crank it just has one longer race with a one piece bearing. If you press the races off and measure the diameter of the crank they are the same.
Any 00 or newer crank is better than a 98 or 99, if your 00 crank is straight, use it. Or if you want to go by my standards, any "big" motor of mine starts with a new crank.
When dealing with pressed together cranks, the less times they are pressed apart and back together the better, they get weaker every time. Especially Yamaha cranks with serated pins.
A good virgin crank even used is always the best.
I was just trying to answer your question and help you out..............not sell you anything you already have.
