Help needed. What used sled to buy for 4000$ max?

The more I wait the more that second Vmax in the picture looks tempting. Just don't know about those missing idler wheels. Not sure if it's a big deal or not.

Nope, never used as a summer sled only winter thats why its mint.:)

If I was to compare the rear suspension of an '00 SRX to a '96 Vmax XT would the Vmax be more comfortable in the small bumps? It has 11" compared to the 8" of travel of the SRX. But then the SRX's is a newer pro action type. Anyone tried both sleds?

I think the XT will have a softer ride but not 100% sure on that. It does have a little more travel than the SRX.
I think if your looking for a cheaper ride to putt around on than the XT is your better route.
BUT if you really get into the sport and really love speed and can't get enough of it ( Like me ) and the friends I ride with than the XT will not fill the bill.
Im not sure Phat if your into cars but its very similar to owning are sports car, your always in the hunt to go faster.:)

My bad, read the rest of the posts and saw he was down to $1500 price range now...

$1500 I would be looking for an SXR 700. I think there are some decent ones to be had in that price range.

There is a local ad for a 97 SX 700 that is stretched to 136" and has altitude comp. for $1900. So ya there are good used sleds out there.

When you put it that way. I did buy a sports car last summer and enjoy every second driving it. Don't know allot of guys who don't like sports cars and speed. :)

I don't know anyone else who snowmobiles, but last week my brother-in-law said he will rent one this winter to go out one weekend with his friends. Maybe Ill join them...

If you want reliability, I'd suggest a 600 or 700 SXr, SX, or Vmax(any non powervalved triple). These are less maintenance than a powervalved Viper or SRX and you can pick them up fairly cheap these days.

I just bought an 2007 Phazer FX for $4000 - 890 miles on it.

They are out there is you look.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. Seems like the consensus is to go with a triple. I might do just that as SRX7 sled is very tempting seen its in mint condition. I'm trying to convince myself that if I make this sled last forever that the difference in price will seem insignificant. I can easily see myself at 65 and still using it to go ice fishing.

I just found out that one of my brother-in-law's friend just bought a new Arctic Cat. An F8 I think. If I want to go ride once with them I'll need Yamaha's triple to follow.

no, all you will need is a sled that will run without blowing up to ride with cat guys.


a non powervalved sx600 or 700 won't be able to keep up to the f8 while it is running, but a srx 6/7 will.

Also, I have seen several 03-04 rx1s for 4k or under, but that is here in WI.
 
You can usually find the idler wheel assemblies (for the Vmax XT) used for under $50.

However, after reading the entire post, it seems that you are are looking to get bit by the sledding bug. First trail riding will latch on to you, and then off-trail riding will completely overtake you and you will be unable to think of much else.

I advise doing a lot of looking until you can find a red-head triple that is in good shape. After you have had it a while, you will want to upgrade to a newer model for sure. A bonus is if you can keep the older sled, and acquire a new one in a few years.

What ever you do, DO NOT get bit by the MOD bug . . .
 
I glaced throught the others..and well...I'd say start small or cheap and once the bug catches you...you'll want more...I literally jumped from a 600xt to a viper...I looved teh XT...but it was a tank..but reliable as hell...not bad for trail riding but when you put on the brakes..its momentum still goes...altho I'd suggest a viper..you wallet isn't that thick...
Personally if you can..grab the XT..but offer lower...the suspension was awesome in that ride..but then again..if you can get a 97xt..thats even better...I personally loved the look of the ole VMAX pogo's...but you definetly won't be having to much fun in the powder playing...it'll be smooth but not flickable...oh...it was also harder to start in -20 temps..but a hairdryer did help me out..
