Finally went out and got a service manual. I'll start working on her again today.

Yeah, if you put her together right with new pistons, rings, gaskets, etc. then I'd bet your piston to cylinder wall clearance is too great. Rings won't seal the compression.
Well, I took her apart. I'm embarrassed to tell you but all four rings were upside down. I checked ring gap and all four were .018, which according to the manual is dead on perfect. Apparently (or I assume) my machinist checked and took care of the ring gap for me. I haven't checked side clearance. Do you think upside down rings would lower compression that much?

No, but never experienced that either. Check the diameter of the piston skirt and the cylinder wall diameter anyhow. Keep us posted...

Well, I finally started working on her again last night. Put the rings in correctly put it back together squirt some fuel in the cylinders and it fired on the first pull. I guess upside down rings can cause that problem.
