So my roommate got lucky the other day and found a 87 phazer for $400 on craigslist. Its in great shape, 3600 or so miles. The previous owner just had a boatload of maintenance done at his local shop...to the tune of $700.
So last night we fired her up in the garage and its much louder than anticipated. Turns out it is already piped and it has fox shocks in the rear skid. I am guessing these never had fox shocks factory.
Some questions now:
Can anyone on here identify what mfg. pipe this is?
Does it have 8 tooth drivers stock? So will it fit a 1.25 lug?
The plan is to longtrack it, either 121 or 136x1.25. Are there oem extensions that will work or who makes them to go from a 116 to a 136?
Will stock mountain max skis fit on it? Or does the saddle need modification?
PICS(they came out crappy):

afaik, these phasers never had any fox factory shock option.
good score though!
as far as the pipe, I can say it is def not stock, but I have no clue as to what brand that is. Aaen perhaps??

Pipe looks a lot like a psi I had once. Does it have an s-curve looking outlet on it?
Fox shocks were not a factory option.
The new plastic skis can be made to fit. The saddle needs to be modified to work.
Should have 8's in it from the factory. A 1.25 should fit, but it's tight going back together. Check with Hartman in ID for extensions or have a set made at the local machine shop.

The pipe does have have a 90 curve at the very end to go down and out. Sounds like hartman will be getting a call for the extensions. What kind of mods do the plastic skis need to fit on here?

I had that same sled back then and I would say that is a Aaen pipe I think they made them for Bender (Bender and Aaen had a working relationship back then)
flow thru silencer stinger out the end (had to make new hole for exit)
@ 14 hp increase
Bender also sold fox shocks for the suspension @ $140 each
I most likely have a old Bender/Aaen catalog with that stuff in it, dont know why I keep that stuff lol

Phazer
That is Not an Aaen pipe. Poor workmanship with the kinking welds. Most likly a PSI they looked like that. Had one on a Exciter. Looked like that. Loud !!! Had a Aaen on my 85 Phazer, for sure not that pipe ! Oh and it ROCKED ! Fox shocks were a aftermarket addition. Only gas shock for the skid at the time, others were to follow later. Decent find though. HOPE and PRAY the engine has been maintained over the summer months. Fogged / Oiled, You will find out soon enough. Good luck with it !!

My PSI doesn't like anything like that actually is more like the Aaen. I've been told psi and Aaen at one point they were the same...?

Well the Aaen I had on my Phazer was smooth at the bend, had a great fit and finish and said Aaen on it. The PSI on the Exciter looked like the one you have. Look under the heat sheild for a name. They usually put there name on them on top. We ran 147.5 main jets with stock clutching. My buddy would show up with a new belt, two new plugs and 5 gallons of race fuel and try all weekend to beat it on his 86 Phazer. Good times !!!

now that I look closer I dont think it is a Aaen or Bender (same pipe) they also made a can pipe that exits the stock hole, so they make a end stinger pipe and a can pipe.
but looking at motor side I think their pipes where smooth bent not cut and welded?

I long-tracked a '96 Phazer and used the Yamaha OEM extensions; call Bruce at CB Performance-they did a bunch of work for me.
That pipe looks a little like the Aaen pipes I have put on nearly all my Phazers (I'll take pics one of these days I swear).
GREAT find!

DECKER made pipes (mike decker) for those phasers and also GARY at RPC made a bunch of sets!!!!
I wouldn't spend ANY MONEY on a long track or ANYTHING ELSE!!!! Just drive it like you STOLE IT and ENJOY the 400.00 SLED!!!!!

nosboy-you hit it on the head. The decision was made to leave it as is and beat the crap out of it. If parts come available for a steal, then maybe work will be done to it.
As far as the pipe...it seems there is a lot of differing opinions. I looked at the aaen on ebay and it has a smooth bend, not kink welds. Oh well, doesnt really matter in the long run.
Some more questions now. The sled doesnt really idle well. It fires right up with the choke but as soon as the choke is off it revs up a bit then dies. Any ideas? Im sure it needs a carb cleaning but would that be why it does this? It also smokes like a pig.
The other thing is that there is no ignition switch and the kill switch is broken off. How would this have been bypassed to where it still runs? We are trying to at least install a switch so once it runs without dying we can shut it off, but I am not sure how to wire this. The plug that looks like it went to the key is just sitting in there not connected or anything? Ideas?
