Fix/Rebuild or Buy Cheap?

Guys, I can get from my Father-in-Law his old 89 Ovation for nothing. Basically it's mine, I just have to pick it up. It's sat outside for the last oh, 10 or 12 years. Hasn't been run in that amount of time either. My brother-in-law in his wisdom of being a pre-teen or teen just added gas to it and ran it without oil and it seized up. They basically parked it and it's sat there since. I'm looking for a cheap ice fishing sled. The sled looks fine cosmetically (needs waxing big time.)

The things I don't know the condition of are track, belt, motor, bearings, skid.... and on and on. I've been trying to pick up a cheap 340 motor but have had no luck.

I'd hate to spend a ton of money on it when I can buy a beater sled from the 70's for about $250 (probably not a Yamaha, although there was a 338 I saw...) Supposedly that runs and probably will get me onto and off of the ice for the next couple of years.

I know I'll need to go through the ovation pretty good and probably put some studs into whatever I decide to do.

I'm just looking for some opinions.

10 or 12 years??? wow i can't see any thing being good on that and not
froze up, i would look for somthing else ready to go, there out there cheap.
 
THere's a guy by me that has a Boa-Ski 340 that looks in good shape, has 310 miles supposedly for $250. Don't know much about Boa-ski's.....

I'm only guessing on how long it's sat. I'd think it has to be that long, sometime in the early to-mid 90's..... It's a shame cause it's cosmetically in good shape.... I should take it and part it out....
 
By the boa ski for now, fix up the Yami. next summer. If you get it to run, you can sell the boa next fall and get all of your money back

That's one way to look at it. I just never put the time into looking at the ovation this summer. I should have. I opened the hood the other week. Clean inside aside from the mouse house.

The boa has a hitch already on it. I've got some trailgrabber semi-studs for the track. I'd think that the older sled would be fairly light. Easier to toss in the back of the truck and such.

I know I'd sink more than $250 into parts/honing, etc.
 
Talked things over with my better half....either option will be a challenge....

What I've seen is that the boa is about 300#'s and 35hp. Woohoo! Hmm...my vmax is 600+ #'s and about 95hp.... Told the wife that the more of a beater the ice sled is the better!
 
I called the guy to come see it today. Crazy he didn't call me back. He pulled the ad and put it on ebay after telling me "no problem, come on by." It's now way over what he had it listed for.

Want ads here I come.... Anyone know of any of good cheap ice fishing sleds?

I called a couple of times and checked the number just to be sure....oh yeah, it's him. That's fine. People will get what they are due some how some way.
