Cannot Bleed Coolant!

Well, "ready to ride" yet...how did it go for you...was it the TH?

blues, no upate yet. I ordered a new T Stat which should be in early next week. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks, G.B.

Well it appears that my thermometer is some 40 degrees off! I finally got my new thermostat and it opened at the same indicated 155 F as my old one.

So I installed the new thermostat anyways and spent another 4 plus hours yesterday trying to sort out my bleeding/cooling issue. No Luck. I am now done working on it. I am going to take it to either a dealer or local shop to look at it.

I am so frustrated. I think I have spent more time trying to sort out the cooling issue than rebuilding the complete sled. :o|

I dont know if the water pump impeller is spinning on the shaft? Or the temp sensor in the head is bad and I am not getting the motor hot enough?, or the coolant cap is bad?, or that there is a blockage in the new rear heat exchanger I added? I just dont know................ G.B.

i remeber last year somone had a problem, the gear that meshes with the crank gear on the impellar shaft spun on the shaft instead of turning the shaft, but only when it warmed up..
^^^ That was SNOWRULES. WP worked fine at idle while the machine was warming up. Once it got hot the gear would just spin on the shaft. He figured it out by pull all the WP stuff out and trying to spin the gear, which didn't move. The he warmed the gear up with a lighter or tourch for 1 sec, gear would spin like a top (which it's not supposed too).

I would seriously consider this possibility. When his was doing this it presented exactly like a air bleeding problem. Do a search on his ID and read the post.

^^Yes that's it..what i was reading that day.

Thanks SRX7, Yamerdown, and daman for your comments. Although, I did not like what I read in SNOWRULES post on the spinning impeller gear. I just had CB Performance replace a crank shaft bearing and look over the rest of the crank. I am not sure that they would have looked for this. I am really not going to be happy if I have to tear my new motor down. I am going to send SNOWRULES a note to ask him how he found the spinning gear with a torch.

Thanks, G.B.

Yah he's a friend of mine, I'm sure he'd be happy to help you out.

Can you not just pull the water pump cover off and go from there?
Yes you can pull the cover and try to spin the impeller, I would definitely start there. That said, SNOWRULES machine passed that test. He ended up pulling the motor and removing the WP (housing, impeller, seals, etc). Then he tried to spin the gear with a screw driver and/or pliers. Still did not slip. Then he used a propane torch and heated the gear up for 1 sec (literally). Once he did that it would spin virtually frictionlessly. Let it cool for 10 seconds, gear would be tight and would not slip.

Sounds dumb, but those are the facts.

my Viper Coolant temp light comes on as well,But the boards are getting hot and melting snow. So i am in the same boat as you!

YamerDown,

I think you answered my question on how SNOWRULES checked the impeller gear with a torch. Man, I hope that a spinning impeller gear is not my problem. I just put my motor in my sled after rebuilding it this past summer!

I am going to take my sled to the best Yamaha dealer in the state. I am really tired of working on it and just want to ride....... G.B.

2002 Viper, my running board and rear heat exchangers are not getting any heat. They are stone cold.

When is your temp light coming on? Is it happening in low snow like hard packed or iced trails? Or low speed in and out of a town? If so, this is typical for a Viper. That is why I added a rear cooler this summer with my engine rebuild with hopes of reducing this issue.

Yamaha must of designed it that way for the gear to be just pressed on. I can't see Yamaha scrimping on not putting a tac weld on the gear.

Again, exactly what SNOWRULES was like. His left side running board would get a little warm right at the very front, but not hot and not the whole thing because the coolant just wasn't flowing.

If I was you I'd try running the sled until it gets nice a warm. Then pull off the pipes and the WP cover and see if it spins. At least that way you don't have to take the motor out or remove all the WP components.

NOTE: One last thing no one was mentioned yet, that water pump gear also drives the oil pump (I think). You might want to through some mix in the tank before you squeak a piston.

or a roll pin....

lol, yah SNOWRULES had his tac welded before he put it back together. Not sure why Yamaha didn't use a key or a pin. Dumb!
