2001 SX 700R Stator

What have you guys seen on sx's with a bad stator for Ohm readings? I have one here that I think the stator is toast on. I'm getting VERY little resistance between leads on the stator. (Like around 1 ohm). Something isn't right here, but when most stators go bad dont the resistances go up, not down? That's how others I have checked with bad stators have been. Anyone seen one go this way?
 
The other issue is that when comparing to specs they obviously specify colors of wires to be checking between. Problem is all the wires coming from this stator are white, and on the other side of the coupling they are still all white. No black/red, brown/red, or brown wires.
 
i had one go on my SX but i dont remember the ohm readings...when you set it on something and check the ohms bang on the table around it...if the ohms jump everywhere its no good...thats the way mine was

I seem to remember mrviper saying that when testing a stator it should pulsate when pulling over, which wires I can’t remember...just putting it out there...
 
Not that its any help but I did go try to find my paper on this but no luck.......... dam I could of walked you through it too.
 
I found my paper.....

IF yours is the same, my tiangle shaped connector between the B/r and BR should read 392 to 479 ohms.

My rectangle shaped connector, the wg to wr should read 189 to 231 ohms.

The three ingnition coils should read .18 to .24 ohms

spark pluk caps should be arond 5K ohms.

an internal short within a given winding will show a lower resistance... it effectively mimiks a much shorter than actual winding...
 
Believe I may have found the problem here. The pickup coil resistance is way out of spec. My next question is, does the pickup coil and stator come as a unit? Looking at the fiche, it looks like they come together (as the stator). I have never bought a stator before, does it come with the pickup coil? Or can you get the pickup coil separate somehow?

They do come together. Now I'm wondering if there is any way I can get them seperately. Even if I can find a used pick-up coil, that would be good as well.
 
Your specs you are using are for the wrong year SXR thats why they don't jive. Your 01 has the high output ign and those specs are for the old ign. If you think the pick up coil is bad, I have loose ones and we can just change the pick up.

Bring it over.

Yea i know the specs that Tod put up are for the earlier ignitions. I actually have the 2001 service manual with all the specs, and the pickup coil is the only thing that is out of spec. I have a VERY high resistance through the pickup coil. So its not too bad to put in a loose pickup without getting the whole new stator? That would be great if we could do that. Is there anything special to it that makes it a difficult job? I could bring the sled down if I had to but if its not too bad of a job to do I could just buy a pickup from you and put it in as well. Does the harness have to be removed from the coil wire to get it through the hole?
 
It just depends on how neat you want the install to be. If you want to sneek it through the old sheathing you need to take the plug off. If you're sure it's bad, just pull the stator out and run it down, we'll change it here, I've never had one that the pick coil was bad yet, always the stator itself, I have complete ones also. Just bring whichever down and we'll compare it to a new one, go from there.
 
So from the factory they install the plugs on the end of the wires AFTER running the wires through the hole in the case? I cant believe they wouldn't just make the hole a bit bigger and it would save a couple steps in the production and make it easier to work on down the road.
 
No the plugs will fit through the hole just one at a time, the small one then the big one. I was talking about taking the plug off the pick up coil wire to get it through the black shiething
 
Well I might have some free time this weekend, sunday is probably better for me than saturday. Are you going to be around at all? Maybe I could it bring it down by you and you have a good pick up we can try it and see if that is it, and then do the install right if that fixes it.
 
Just call, if its in the am it should be OK, I figured with the snow you'd been here last night. Just bring the sled we can get it running and test it.
