Any one picked up the new issue of AMSNOW lately ?
Pg 23 is sporting a sweet speed shot of the 02 SRX in an article pondering the comeback of 2-stroke tripple engines . Its nice to see the media give a legend the credit it deserves .
Check it out if you get the mag . it is kind of interesting . :letitsnow

I wont read Amsnow, but I could see 2-stroke triples coming back. With all the problems that big twins have stemming from vibration, the move to triples would solve a lot of those issues.
IMO, the market's move from triples to twins was a result of the snowmobile manufacturers letting the beancounters and stock holders call the shots, instead of asking real riders what they want in a sled.
I always thought it was really cool that Yamaha never bought into the big twin fad and instead was open-minded and saw that twins, triples and even 4-bangers have their place in a snowmobile.

Unfortunatly there is no way in he!! we will ever see this move from Yamaha. They have invested far too much time and capitol into the 4 stroke movement and it IS the future wether anyone wants to admit it or not. I love my 2S triples, but fully understand and apreciate the merits of the 4-strokes. Quads, bikes, outboard/watercraft and even lawn care have adopted or even fully converted to 4 stroke and the sleds will too as emission restrictions become increasingly stricter. A modernized 2S triple with direct injection in an a-arm chassis with the dual shock skid would be awesome, but it ain't gonna' happen!

Take good care of your SRXs and Vipers boys!

Why did Yamaha move everything to 4-stroke and not keep developing some 2-stroke engines? The SRX was an awesome motor.
Back in 2001 we had to make the choice based on two factors that really boiled down to one: Manpower resources. It took everyone we had to move forward quickly with the RX-1 development leaving no engineering reserves to continue the SRX line. We realized the demand for an 800cc 2-stroke etc. but we had to choose. Another factor looking forward was the impending EPA emissions regulations and what is right for the environment. The total loss lubrication of the 2-stroke is a tough (and costly) one for technology to overcome and a big advantage for 4-stroke. The oil migrating through the 2-stroke engine is largely not burned (efficiently) and consequently not captured in the current EPA mandated testing… not yet.
At the time it was a gamble for us, looking back, I have no regrets. I think the torquey character of a 4-stroke powered sled, offers up a huge grin factor.
Food for thought...

Well i can post the first page but the second goes over the attatchment size limit . sorry guys .

For certian, two-strokes are dead with Yamaha. The real question is whether Ski-Doo who is committed to 2-strokes still, could come out with a triple. Now that would generate some interest.

Or Polaris. Just imagine if they took their 140 hp 700 twin and added another cylinder to make it a 950 triple. That thing would probably be putting out at least 170 hp and thats on a single pipe. Make it a triple-triple and you could easily be looking at 200 hp.
Its not as if Polaris has anything going for them in the 4-stroke market that would make them want to expand their 4-stroke program. The FST and IQ Turbo both have issues galore. I know people who own these sleds and lemmie tell ya, Im not impressed with them.
I personally think that until the EPA forces Doo, Poo and Cat to go all 4-stroke, you will see them investing in clean 2-strokes.
The only thing I see that might prevent the return of triples is manufacturing cost. It costs 1/3 less to make a twin-cylinder engine and with how down sled sales have been in recent years, I dont know of the other 3 would want to invest in triples. I see them trying to tame the vibration of big twins before they would invest in building triples.
I personally think thats very foolish on the part of the other 3 to hold onto 2-strokes and virtually ignore the 4-stroke market. The day is going to come when 2-strokes are outlawed by the EPA, and then what are they going to do? They will then have to scramble for engines that meet the EPA regs and unlike Yamaha, they wont have the motorcycle engine technology to draw from. The sleds will be heavy, underpowered, will have issues galore and Yamaha will pretty much own the snowmobile industry.

I think the verdict is out and im seing some of my fellow friends with 4 strokes going back to 2 strokes and much talk about the days of the sweet tripples at the ice shack on the weekends.
I have a 2004 zr 900 twin and might go back to a viper !

a zr?? what made you do that?? ;) I think twins are overrated, tripples are pretty sweet, but 4s is the way to go, at least for me and my trail riding. 2s are over for yamaha at least

I can not imagine yamaha ever moving back to 2 strokes and I would not want them to!!!!!! Don't get me wrong they made the best 2 strokes on the market bar nun, but there are very few advantages to a 2 stroke if any!!! For those of you out there that have went from an outstanding 2 stroke yami to a 4 stroke yami and back to a 2 stroke, I feel ya......the 4 strokes feel and handle really different...but give it time:) they will get them down in weight, bring back the slot car feel, and they will get 25to 50 mile, to the gallon, with no 2 stroke oil to consume....any snowmobile company that doesn't invest soon will be that much farther behind!!!! Imagine your car, would you like that to be a 2 stroke? How about the street bikes.......would you rather be on a 2 stroke? When yamaha wants to they will make there 4 stroke naturally asperated produce 200 hp easy....look at a street bike! I think that yamaha needs to do is bring back there lowered slot car feeling lake racer and drop 160hp 4 stroke in it and call it an SRX:) I bet a couple of people would line up at the dealer!!!!! What do you think???RR

My viper was stolen last year and it took alot of time /effort and $$ to get it were it was and i didnt have the heart to start over again.
The Zr 900 is alot easier to handle in the bumps and you dont feel the hurt after a long run and i even have my friend pissed off with his 2006 attak (cant beleive the way it handles)
The one thing i would trade for is the vipers smooth tripple/sound and of course the great quality of the sled in general !
I know i will always make it back with a stock viper ! ZR ?
