I've always liked that pic

I've read the article, written by Olav Aaen, and he makes some good points about a triple with a single pipe getting good fuel economy and easily meeting the emissions standards. I think he is right, sometime down the road a manufacturer will build one.

TWO STROKES ARE DONE. THEIR FOUR STROKES JUST KICKED *** AT THE SHOOTOUT. FOR GET IT. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Holey crap, did the earth quit spinning?? Tony are you ok?? LOL

I still got my SRX, havent started it in 2 years though. I just cant seem to bring myself to sell it, that triple was soooooo smooth.

Interesting Read

I was searching for this AMSNOW article on the web and found another interesting read about 2 strokes future. Check it out The Future of Two Strokes

p.s. I couldn't find the AMSNOW article mentioned in this thread. If anyone can scan both pages so its readable I can post them.

I understand Yamaha didnt have the engineering resources to develop the RX-1 and also the SRX line but what needed developing to run the 02 sled for 2 or 3 more yrs with simply new graphics and different grips, etc? I was surprised they stopped production as I was that Cat stopped production of the F7 in 2006. I fully expected Cat to continue with EFI only and fewer color/sno pro versions but still pump out F7's for 2 more yrs. I think both Yam and Cat missed lots of market share with old technology but thats not the point here...

I had a 99 SRX 700 and loved it but after 2 yrs I sold it and moved on and pretty much had new sleds every yr or 2 including a 08 Nytro FX. Long story short Im back on an 02 SRX and am as happy and probably happier than I was on the Nytro, Dragon, Renegade 800 and ZR 800 that I had in between. My experience so far with the 4 stroke wasnt good and Im not finding any of these new sleds to satisfy me after owning an SRX and F7. Long live the SRX!!!!

well obviously ski doo figured it out! their 2 stroke weights less, meets EPA standards, and gets as good as or better fuel economy than the 4 strokes with comparable retail cost. and to think for 2010, every OEM except 1 is still selling 2 strokes. remember when everyone said 2 strokes would be gone by 2010? yamaha could have easily sold 2 strokes and 4 strokes together - same as they do with boat motors. yamaha couldn't have put the viper motor in the apex chassis because then everyone would see how much the 4 stroke weights. but man they should have made one last a arm chassis and put a hopped up viper motor in it. oh, what could have been.......

ski-doo might have figured it out for a while but how long do you think those motors will last with little or no oil being used. makes you wonder how long those crank bearings can handle very little lubicration. i bet you won't see any new 2 stroke doos getting 22000km on there bottom end like on my 98 srx. jmo ;)!

Very true !
Here in Quebec lots of guys are trading in their doo's for yamaha's
I mean come on you buy a $12000 machine and it blows up during the first 5000 km's !

hey, i never said they had to be reliable! LOL

if i rode the wide open trails in canada, then a 4 stroker is what i would be on. and a yamaha at that. in the tight whoopped out trails of northern wisconsin and ditchbanging in Illinois, no thank you.

yamaha could have easily went after both market segments if they really wanted to. the whole "oil loss system" blah blah blah, sure does sound good on paper.

Compared to OB motors market snowmobiles sales are a drop in the bucket. Yamaha didn't want to commit twice the resources to produce both type of engines just to sell a few more. Currently BRP has the least pollutant 2 stroke with their 600 E-Tec. Carbon monoxide looks good at 132CM but then you look at the high hydrocarbon emissions at 50HC compared to lets say the Nytro at 8.8HC.

In the long run it cost less money to build 4 strokes engine that can continue to pass emission regulations that gets more stringent as years pass. Catalytic converter, O2 sensor, close loop systems are old technology that can be easily adapted to 4 stroke sleds.

With 2 strokes you have to re-engineer the engine with new technology to meet new regulation which is very costly. Don't get me wrong, I wish BRP continues working the E-Tec they brought from their Evinrude OB motors. Having too different type of engines to chose from is great. Let's just hope they can keep it up.
