First let me thank Turk & MRVIPER for the clutching help and this forum for the repair advice. Everything I have done or know about this sled has come from the generosity of this forum.
I bought a 99 SRX 700 a couple years ago with 6,200 miles on the clock. It would get to 90-95 pretty quick then creep to 100 and stay there. This was on hardpack railroad beds with a little meally stuff on top. This sled had a history of wrapping the needle past 120 on the dream meter before I bought it. When I bought it, it had Aaen Pipes (I know...I know), 3/4" track w/ 96 picks and an RX-1 51/43 Helix.
Over the fall of 2005 I went thru the sled. It just had so many piece/parts simply worn out. Here's what I did:
New Pwr Valves and cables (all gaskets & assoc seals), I adjusted them accordingly, Belt, Plugs & Caps, FuelPump & Fuel Filter, Oil Pump Check Valves, Hyfax, Viper rear shocks, Front lift brackets, Quick adjust transfer rods, New stock reeds, Front A-Arm bushings, H.D. Rear Susp Bushing Rebuild Kit, Welded W-Arm & added gussets, Replaced all the wheel bearings and most of the idler wheels, Also replaced the Drive & Jackshaft bearings, Gear oil replaced & chain adjusted, Marginal snow wheel kit, Steering Hiem joints, Primary clutch rebuilt by dealer, 2000-2002 SRX 8dn-20 weights w/ 4.5g rivets in both holes, Stock Rollers & Shims, WWW Primary Spring, GRN Secondary Spring wrapped at 60, RX-1 51/43 Helix, Camber and toe adjusted, Rage ski's w/ 6" carbides, Track adjusted & aligned, Skid lubed, New limiter straps adjusted 3/4" past nut, Compression test 134-136, Carbs and clutches have been cleaned.
This sled runs really nice and is dependable. It feels really raunchy on the bottom end, but even after all this work it still tops out at 100. It is jetted correctly from the previous owner. I can hold it WFO for miles on the railroad beds and it doesn't skip a beat. It now has 7760 on the clock.
I now have a spring gauge, so I'll be able to measure track tension. Can anyone think of what might be holding it back.........I'm just running out of ideas. TIA.

Has the sled ever had a top end rebuild?, are you sure you adjusted the pv's the right way?,and there still all working? none are pulled?BadAzzSRX said:Can anyone think of what might be holding it back.........I'm just running out of ideas. TIA.
with that many miles it'll be down on power for sure if she's never been opened..
make sure the throttle open to full throttle...what is your maximum rpm ?

Those are original miles, never opened. As for the PV's, I let it idle down to <900 for several seconds then shut it off. I set the PV's to 2.5mm. The PV's only have about 1000 miles on them.

I'll check the throttle. It pulls hard to 8600RPM on hard pack and around 8400 in the meally stuff.......Maybe it's just tired.

wow,,then if you plan on keeping it defienitly needs a freshning upBadAzzSRX said:Those are original miles, never opened.
now..
sounds like you did that right..BadAzzSRX said:As for the PV's, I let it idle down to <900 for several seconds then shut it off. I set the PV's to 2.5mm.
your over rev'en some, a 99 you want 83ish(stock) @ top end WOT..BadAzzSRX said:It pulls hard to 8600RPM on hard pack and around 8400 in the meally stuff

Just a thought but........Could it be something as simple as a worn out belt.

It has a new belt.
I think daman might be right and it needs a rebuild. For the mileage it has, I would expect the compression to be lower, but its 134-136 on all three. I checked the throttle and it's opening all the way. If compression is good, what else would you check to validate its time to rebuild it??? I thought a good running/maintained SRX would go to 10,000 miles before a refreshening was due.

Badazzsrx, I had a stock 99 SRX with over 10,000 miles and she would still pull 122 -125mph on dream meter up until the day I sold it. I had a #4 clutch kit from and long travel rear upgrade from Max perf. I wonder if your secondary is not shifting out fully? Aaen pipes, Carb modification? If I remember right mine would come to 8600 RPMs and hold all the way through the power band. I would find some stock pipes and set it back to original. Good luck,

did you do a leak down test on it??? how many cranks did it take to get to you comp ratio?? I'd warm it up good, and do a leak down on it

something could not be right in clutching yes, and a comp. test doesn't really tell of a motors true health a worn out piston an rings will build pressure fast but will it hold it?, NO!!!, guaranteed you have a boat load of blow by going on.

worn secondary?

Maybe check the alignment of the clutches. I agree with Blue Bullet comment.

i would look at the buttons on the clutch, both primary and secondary, with over 7000 miles, they probally need some lovin.

I have not done a leakdown test. I just ordered a dual gauge tester, so I'll check it in 3-8 days. When I did the Comp Test, I think I yanked it 3 times per cylinder. The primary was rebuilt by the dealer last year and the buttons still look good. The secondary is relatively new from an 03 RX-1, and those buttons also look good. I don't have a clutch alignment tool, maybe there is somebody in Southern Maine reading this that can help me out. I have no idea when they were last aligned. If all else fails, I'll try my local dealer. Thanx for the ideas...........I've never done a leakdown test before. Are there any precautions for doing this on a sled? What results should I look for (X = good results and Y = time to rebuild)?

I wouldn'd even bother with testing the cyl's....
Your sled with thos miles needs a fresh top end(Rings, pistons checked for outa spec)your getting allot of blow by.

try giving it more air. I had my air box replaced and didn't cut the top out for my cold air kit --I bought it used and didn't much about my srx700 at the time. it would run fine for awhile then motor would lay down on top end wide open. I tried all kinds of things to fix it. I finally took top off air box and took it for a short run and it ran fine on top end. try it might work for you

daman,
Do you think a top end rebuild is all it needs, what about spliting the case and replacing the crank seals and bearings. I checked the clutch side with deep creep tonight and it didn't change the rpm's. How do you check the other side?? What's the life span on crank bearings??
I can get most everything from Ron Ayers for around $450 minus the case gasket. Where do you buy your parts??

I'm not saying this is your problem/could be some of it could be none of it, just that if your going to keep the sled it's a good idea to regain loss HP.BadAzzSRX said:daman,

yep splitting the case and replacing the crank seals/and checking the crank for outa phase is a good thing to do while in there, including checking the bearings. use only OEM parts.

BadAzz, youre sayin youve changed both primary and secondary clutches... Is it because the jackshaft bearing failed? I just had the same problem on my 99' SRX. The two clutches have hit and I had to change both and I think the guy who worked on my sled did not placed the bearing exactly at the original position. Since I had my sled back, I loss a LOT of speed and RPM doesn't goes past 8000, no matter which weight I use. Besides my YPVS are well adjusted and compression is good on all cylinders. I just sent it to the dealer to realign the clutches I'll keep you up to date on that. Sounds that we have the same problem...

Sounds just like my 99 srx. No topend and won't pull past 8000rpms..
