I bought a 98 SRX 600 this summer with 9000 miles and know nothing about the history. I just got done installing a ripsaw 1 1/4 track, and long travel under carriage. I then put drop down brackets on the front shocks. The sled came with a after market can and it looks like a bender. I just had the local yamaha shop clean and adj the carbs and power valves. they also installed a white skid plate for me. When I got it back they pointed out that the rpm and gas guage dont work. I took it out for a ride today and fouled out some of my plugs right away. All I had at the time were BR9ES for spares, so I put them in. It seemed to run better, then we got to a seasonal road and I punched it and all I could get was 65mph, my wife passed me on here stock SXR 600, I have no top end, at best sometimes I can reach 80 on my speedo. Any Ideas? Oh ya the shop said my compression was great!
- was not running on all 3 cylinders
-all powervalve cables pulled thru
-major clutching issues; sled should be pulling 83-8500 rpm solid at wide open throttle
but with stock clutching it,s more like 9k rpm..

take your cover off the servo motor where the power valve cables hook to. I had the same thing happen to me no power. took cover off and found the cables came unhooked from the servo motor. put them back on and worked fine for me.

As for not running on all three, it seems to pull good off the line. As for power valve cables I don't know, I would have thought the shop had those taken care of. As far as clutching I'm don't know much, but I know a little and it seemed stock, my little brother has a SXR 700 clutched and a bender can and he kills my sled.

I would think the dealer would check but I bought mine from the dealer used and the cables were off the servo motor -it like 3 screws to take off I think. so after that I bought the repair manual it was worth the money-- because they go a certain way.

Thanks I can't wait to find out if thats it.
What are your rpm,s at wide open throttle? That will help a lot.
the thing I see when reading post #1 is you mention the tach and gas gauge dont work, does this sled even sound like its running right on all 3 cylinders? you might very well have a worn thru wiring harness and its shorting out the lights, it can also short out the powervalve servo motor, and the cdi box can also be bad not opening up the servo motor.
As Turk said, the top rpm will be a very important clue !
BTW_ if you change the headlight dimmer switch from low beam to high beam, does the tach needle flicker or move for a second?

Tommrow I'll check to see if the cables are hooked up correctly. If they are I'll lean towards maybe a bad CDI box or a short in the harness.

By lights not working, do you mean headlights and taillights. My brake light, my taillight and bright and dim headlights all work.

If it is a bad motor what do they run?

There is a guys in the classifieds that has one for sale.....I think!!!!! If it is your powervalves your sled will put low rpm....like turk asked what is your sled running at wide open throttle???

I have no idea what I'm running at WOT because my tach isn't working.

Thats a good reason.ss racing said:I have no idea what I'm running at WOT because my tach isn't working.
(tach doesnt work...)LOL< ya thats a good reason...... well get this sled up on a jackstand, then remove the black palstic servo cover for the powervalves. Start up the sled, first off change the headlight dimmer from high beam to low beam a few times, does the tach needle move at all, flicker a slight bit?
Next rev up the sled to a good 3/4 throttle whacks, does the servo pulley acutate the powervalve cables, meaning does it SMOOTHLY pull the cables open? or is it all erratic and jerking the pulley back an forth?
do these checks and I will know where to instruct you to look for next test.

Do I take the servo motor cover off to see if they work smoothly?
