my sled(98 700 Xt) seems to foul plugs abit, and i've seen a couple of post were people were running 142 across. so I checked my jetting....
143.8..143.8..145.

needle 2nd clip from the top

mods
v force reeds
reed spacers
head gasket mod
had mbrp can(had to remove it last year. fish and game didn't like it) so back to stock muffler
maxximum clutch kit

keep in mind I haven't ran the sled yet this year, this is based on previous years. allthough I have been jetted like this for about 4 years.

Personally I'd stick with NGK plugs. That jetting is stock isn't it? You need to make sure the needles are set right and maybe drop them 1/2 position from stock. It definitely helps. You'd want one washer on top of the clip and one under instead of both under.
 
I don't think the jets are stock. I'm pretty sure my dealer rejetted it when they installed the v force reeds(was 6 or 7 years ago). I was thinking about trying the br9eya plugs, but thought I would try and fix the problem instead of masking it. and my needles don't have washers, they have 5 slots and a c-clip washer. as I said my needle is set to the 2nd from the top position.

Edit.... carbs have been cleaned many times. what is the float height in MM?

The stock specs are here . According to this that's the stock jetting. Float height is 13.2 +/-2mm. Click here Just click on the right year at the bottom of the page.

thank you! those 2 links are very informative. I pretty sure that I don't have any of the 4mm spacers though. maybe my dealer removed them when they installed the v force reeds. they also must have changed the needle clip position, as its in the 2nd clip, moved from the third. shouldn't that lean it out in the midrange?

but do any of the jetting gurus think this is too rich? I think I could drop a main, but I'm no expert. I was hoping someone may have the same setup.

wouldn't think twice about using anything BUT NGK! I just took a look at my plugs from last year. Just as I thought carbon fouled. doesn't that indicate I'm too rich?

edit... I'm gonna go double check my needles right now. I'm pretty sure I have no 4mm spacers. I had it apart last night. but I'll look again. with the needle in the 2nd clip and no spacers. that is leaning it out correct?

well, upon further inspection. I do have a 4mm washer under the needle, but not over. I read in the tech section that there should be a washer over and under the clip. So I checked the needle. and there is a bit of up and down play. would that cause any problems? I doubt it would cause my plug fouling, but maybe eratic throttle? I guess i'll order a few washers and put them back. I also checked the clutch and jetting page. would the sx trail jetting(142 mains) be ok for me? it is the same engine correct? mods again.. v force reeds, reed spacers, head gasket mod 1 layer, and I'm gonna drill the stock can.

you don't want that play in there,get a washer...set to spec....

Some times a washer gets stuck inside...just so you know, take a good look inside, I use a dental pick to scrap in there just to make sure one was left in there...
 
Champion VS NGK

Well I had the same problem, fouling plugs . Rejet lower same foul problem.Put champions in no problem since installed . Seems when base went from gold to silver ngk went down .I have also seen several wire connectoion problems at the bullet connectors to the coil . Orange wire (Primaryfeed) black to (Ground side) Black residue ,burnt connections.Both on 2000 & 98 sx models . Check coil wires & ground junction near cdi box. Keep on fouling with NGK . I use CHAMPION because they work for me and dont fail.Persoanl oppion. My set up.SLP triple pipes 8cr weights loaded . 51/44 helix .Head gasket mod 2 layers. Air box mod. 20/39 gears /Ultimax 3 belt.NGK failed me champion did not. Works for me ! LATER.
 
I always run NGK in my Yamaha's, BUT...

I've seen many cases where you DO NOT want to use them in American stuff. It's best to use whatever plug the manufacturer recommends. My riding buddy has an RMK 700 and has been fighting with an rpm fluctuation ever since he bought it. When he holds it WOT, the rpm's will bounce 100-200. We checked everything we could think of, clutches, carbs, replaced reeds, checked voltages. Nothing made any difference. He finally had a co-worker ask him what plugs he was using. Friend told him the only plug that exists of course, NGK, put them in when he first bought it. His co-worker told him to try putting in the Champions that Polaris comes with. I told him the same thing all of you are saying, Champion is junk, NGK rules, but what the hell we've tried everything else. Put in the Champions, problem gone. I agree that only NGK in Japanese stuff, but they just don't seem to perform as well in American stuff. Someone smarter than me will have to explain why, I have no idea, lol. Just seen to many examples of this holding true.
