well today me and the ladie went for a ride and we side by side at about 40 mph im guessin ( nether sled has a speedo just rpms) so all of a sudden she dropped back all that she could get out of it was 5000 rpms.... i pulled the pluggs and one was perfect (cardboard brown) the other one had metal chunks in it!!!! so.... anyone can thinks of something????? i'm going to tare it down tomarrow

Ouch!!!

Did you clean the carbs???it most likely leaned out & melted a piston...yep...looking at a rebuild...pull the exhaust manifold & take a look...

nope no carb clean just on mine.. he he he (sorry babe) lol do you think i could get away with just pistons and rings?

It all depends on if it took the nicasil off of the cylinder. If it didn't rings and pistons, and away she goes. Maxdlx

Tell ya what. if you clean the inside of the jug with muriatic acid & you can,t dig a fingernail into anywhere it made a scratch you don,t need a re-nik job.

thanks for the feed back you guys have been a great help.... i priced out pistons and rings and they are only 170.... does that sound good... its from a shop in town

He,s not doing u any favours.post that ur looking for a set on here on the wanted to buy classifieds. should get a used one for 1/4-1/2 that.

how many miles and what year sled? some of the late 90 sleds has a service bulletin where the pin on the piston that keeps the rings from rotating would disintegrate allowing the rings to float till the caught on the exhaust port. might want to check both sides.

I seized my 97 V-Maxx 600 two years ago. The oil pump went on it and got lucky it only needed pistons and rings. The total for parts/labour was $1050.00 which I don"t think was too bad considering a quote for a shortblock was $1600 +. We didn"t get too much riding last year with the lack of snow but the first 100 miles last weekend was awesome. I can"t wait to get on the lake to really try it out because it"s running good and pulling harder than ever.

I rebuilt one last year for a guy that was a 97. First time the engine failed due to the ring pin was at 2996 kms. Repaired at the dealer with updated pistons. Second time he brought it to me instead of the dealer and the odometer said 6023. Same thing , Ring spun around snaging a port. Looks like you get 3000 kms and need a rebuild. I tried different pistons (SPI) for the heck of it. It will take him 5 years to get another 3000 kms on it again. Maybe they will last maybe not.

only we can hope so i hope they last forever... for his sake just the part of putting it back on the trailer with no power is tuff.... got i layed on the seat after i got it on the trailer for about 30-45 min's and about 6 budlights and a can of cope later...lol lol man that suck doing with the wife telling you " I didn't even what you to get another sled!!" even that it's for her.... see what happens when you try to do something nice...lol lmao
