Do I need smaller pilots or???

mrviper:
splitting the head gasket is not recommended for trail riding. this removes the sealing surface & can result in engine failure.

the above is a direct quote from COMETIC in one of my past conversations with them. however, if you call or email them with one of your long winded & self absorbed diatribes that they will certainly be convinced that they have indeed made a foolish error & in the future will not pass along any technical info without checking with you first.

I'm glad this only has to be done once because I still haven't gotten them all done yet. I went and bought that gasket stripper and a pair of "solvent gloves" and the gloves lasted about 2 minutes or so before they melted. I have 2 sets done and working on the last set now. I think my fingerprints are gone...

Hey mrviper, how many layers would you use if you were me? I had the 2 layers in there and was using 89 gas (and even 87 sometimes because I forgot I wanted 89...oops) and didn't have any problems. Do you think I should just stick with 2? Or should I just use 1? I have electric start so I really don't care how hard it is to pull it over or anything. And I can always get premium gas so. What do you think?

I personally run the highest octane available at the pump, usu 92-94. It may cost a couple of dollars more at fill up time but is not worth the cost of lost riding time due to having to rebuild a motor that burned down due to detonation.

Yeah I guess I'll use two layers just to be safe. I'm getting ready to go put it back together right now. Gonna check the carb sync too and see how that is. Hmm what else was I gonna do?...

Well it's all back together now. I just got done checking the carb sync and they were off, both the pto and mag were open too far by quite a ways. All I did though was I used whatever size drill bit that was close enough to use, I turned the idle screw until the center slide just dragged on the bit, then I adjusted the outer 2 the same. I haven't ran it yet though. Gonna maybe do that tomorrow. It's raining here and we need some fresh snow. :o|

I was finally able to ride this thing last night. When we first left I couldn't believe how good it was running. The "flat spot" (or whatever you want to call it) between 4000-5000 rpm's that I had was just about totally gone. But what I did was I raised the needles when I synced the carbs. I have the clip in the 4th position down on the center and mag with a washer under and one on top. The pto is set to stock. The only problem was that after several hours of riding probably about midnight the flat spot returned. It's not as bad but it's still there. I'm assuming I'm still too lean on the needles? If so I'd have to set them to one full position richer than stock. I know fuel screws and pilots are only supposed to affect idle to 1/4 throttle but I think that's about where I'm at with the throttle when this flat spot happens. I only have the fuel screws at 1 turn out right now. Do you think I need to raise the needles a half more then? Or should I try turning the fuel screws out more? This thing doesn't come right down to idle instantly either. I'm not sure what they're really supposed to do but stock it always hung up for at least 5 seconds or something before it would actually idle. It's closer than it's ever been to running right since I put these pipes on ;):D
