My old sled, now my sons. 9800 miles on it, still runs great, 125 psi across the board. He has new pistons and rings in hand. I think he should pull the motor and replace the end seals to be safe. He " Mr impatient " wants to slap pistons in it and run. Whats your thoughts ??? Is he asking for a burndown or does it seem OK ? Thanks for any input.
 
i would do it right the first time when you pull the motor you can inspect the crank it would be asame to freshen the top end and have the crank fall if that happens you will have to replace pistons again and more than likly a cylinder or two spend time to save money and do it right
 
why try to fix somthing if it isnt broke?..shit I got 15000 miles on my 97 sx....still runs like it was new! It has never been tore into..not even to replace rings!.. run her!!

That's my feelings too, all I would do is rings, maybe inspect the pistons, but if it aint broke, why fix it? Your getting pretty good compression #'s...I wouldn't even crack it open.
 
^^Havent you guy's been reading anything on here,you been here long enough to know after so many miles rings wear out pistons start to rock blow by happens then a failer could happen, it's a cheap and easy fix to do rings every 5 or so K, and seals would be a very good idea also, do it right do it once.

compression don't tell crap about a health of a 2-srtoke motor,sure it will build pressure fast but will it hold it? no,thats where blow by come's in..

do a search and see the 1000000000 posts on this subject..

i recomend do it all rings/pistons seals, do it right
 
if you are pulling the engine down, replace the crank seals...just cheap insurance.i would also inspect the cylinders very good,look for the nikisil flaking from the walls, and i would also check for piston to cylinder wall clearance.use the new piston...i have a feeling that you will be installing some new or rebuilt cylinders as well....chip.
 
you will probably see that there is blow-by. I would do the pistons and rings. I doubt you will need cylinders but check them. I have 10000Km on mine and I re-ringed and only replaced 1 piston. These red head motors are very reliable.
 
Pistons and rings and she will be good to go! Remember it is a Yamaha. I did my 600 twin last tear and I think it was a waste of time. Everthing looked very clean, there was no slap at all but I replaced the pistons and rings anyhow. Pour a little oil in the cylinder and recheck the compression, easy way to check for blow by.
