Overtemp Warning!!!

Hello,

I have a 2005 SX Venom 600 that has the warning light flashing in snyc with the temp symbol on the cluster. Both lights/symbols flash 8 times, there is a pause and then it repeats. I check the engine temp sensor and the ohms range from 5.33 kohms to about 1 kohm when engine up to temp.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this? I also just put a used gauge cluster on it. Would this cause any issues?

Check the wire coming out of the plug that goes onto the sensor. They have been known to be tight and come apart. Click here for info from the 02 tech update Bulletin.

I will check it out and see what happens. I looked at the connection and it looks good, but there was no way to tell if the wires were broke. I'll let you know what I find.
 
Ok,

So I check the wires where they pluged into the Thermosonsor and they look good. I checked the voltage coming from the plug and I was getting 5V. To me it appears that the thermosensor and plug are good. Any ideas what might be causing the problems I am seeing???
 
Check the whole temp sensor circuit, there is likely a break or short.. Also check that the gauge plug is in place and the boot fully sealed. You might check for moisture when you do this. Follow the cooling system diagnosis flowchart in the manual.

Thanks, I checked things over the best I could as I do not have a manual for this machine yet. I have ordered one and hope to have it soon. I did check all the connections and things seem to be ok. I also did a continuity check back to the electonics module, after this point I am unsure which wire coming out of the module is for the engine temp.

If anyone knows the colour of the wire coming out of the module please let me know. Also, if anyone has the specs for the thermosensor resistance reading it would be greatly appreciated.

The blue/red wire goes to the meter, and the green/red wire goes to the CDI.

The temp sensor should have the following resistance . . .

5.2 - 6.4 K-Ohm at 34 degrees F (0 degrees C)
0.3 - 0.364 K-Ohm at 176 degrees F (80 degrees C)
0.17 - 0.208 K-Ohm at 212 degrees F (100 degrees C)
