hey guys, my buddy is having problems posting on here so i am going to ask for him, he is champstar2121. his '03 trail performance vmax 600 has the triple in it. and it seems to not be firing on all cylinders, has no power! we pulled the jugs and everything looks great! cleaned the carbs and they look good! any ideas on what it might be? tommorrow he is running to the yammy store to get a whole new set of gaskets and we are going from there! check the carbs one more time and throw it together!
if anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated!
thanks!

yes, alll 3 spark..... we checked that right away! but..... could one of them be too weak? we need a manual to check currents or ohm's or something like that! lol.....

Here are the specs for a SRX coil.
You should have .36-.48 ohms when checking each coil individually using the 2 input connections.

You should have 5.4-7.4k ohms when checking from the plug wire to an input connection. (without plug cap)

Spark plug cap alone testing from one side to the other should be 5k ohms.

hey murph could we pull the air box and carbs off annd see if something is in the intake mabey i have no idea what is wrong with the sled i just hope we can fix it soon later

does the sled backfire, how does it idle. Are there any other symptoms.
Have you checked plugs after a short ride. I have one of those sleds as well and they run as smooth as silk.

I have a 2001 like that. It has always ran very rich. It also popped an exhaust doughnut that robbed a lot of power. It also backfires a lot after it has been shut down and restarted, always has. Very loud backfire, but only one. I am guessing it dumps fuel into the cylinders after shutdown. Probably a miss adjusted float on mine.

Mine has also lost power over the years. As it sits right now it tops out about 80mph with my 180 pounds on it. I figure I need to put rings in it to get it back up to what it was like new.

yes it backfires all the time. we put new plugs in it twice and it didn't fix the problem. i know it use to be a real smooth running machine! on our last trip last season it started running bad, we swapped plugs and found no fix to the problem. hence it went on the trailer and came home. thought maybe we lost a ring or something, possibly a skirt off of a piston? pulled the heads during the summer and everything looked great!?cleaned the carbs and it ran good. after we had a snow fall he took it out and it fell on its face again!we have new gaskets on order and will put them in and go from there!

I have 2 of those 03 600 vmax's.. they both backfire..I hate it..folks here said to let it idle down to idle to clear the gas out of the cylinders before shutting down..

I did it today and it seemed to work.. I hope this solves the problems.

I always had problems loading up...until I figured how to start it and run it.

I found unless I changed plugs out it wouldn't clear.

good luck..

I hope to get rid of them soon for 4stroke fuel injected. They been great except for the backfireing.

i checked the exhaust no mouse when we put the sled back together we will lower the idle i hope i can figuer out what is wrong soon so my girlfriend can ride this sled cause i think iam getting a new nytro

well this could be many different things. But here is some things to look at. Carb boots (check for cracks and installation), make sure carbs are clean, check reeds, check exhaust gaskets, intermitant TORS (try bypass) make sure carbs are finctioning properly (needles, sync) Usually back fire is a lean condition.

we both worked onthis thing yesterday and got it running! now it is like brand new! we replaced all of the upper gaskets after pulling the jugs to check for piston damage. then double checked the carbs, upon inspection we noticed 2 of the pilot jets had clogged again and one main jet had clogged again. we thoroughly cleaned and double cleaned everything, got it together and it wouldn't fire! just pop and back fire! decided to change all 3 plugs and she fired up and ran like a champ! never even backfired again! we are assuming it was the carbs but she now has some fresh gaskets to assure no air leaks were there either!
we probably could have had it done quicker if steve's phone would have quit ringing! lol.....

iam with yamyrider you will have to explain symtons better what you said is not telling us anything
usually if you have no power you change the plugs, then try cleaning the carbs and in a worse case scenario you pull the heads, then the jugs. we did all that and it still ran bad. was looking fo a little more input about if the sled had reeds or if anyone might have had a problem with coils going bad?
anyt way, we rechecked the carbs and they did get plugged up again....gave everything a thorough cleaning and all new gaskets on the motor.... now she runs good! thanks for all the ideas!
now on to the backfiring issue!
