700sx plug color?

This is a sx not srx. I never said it burnt the motor down,i am trying to prevent it. I put in some used plugs that were black and within 5 miles they were almost white. The choke plungers were fine also. Will try to get the pics to tom so he can post them. Thanks Rich.

I had br9es plugs in it to start with but they were worse. So i put in the br10es plugs to help keep it from burning down.
was just commenting on your statment here. :)

running a cooler plug won't prevent a burndown, right jetting will.

Heres the pics of his plugs

Rich, are those ground straps grey looking? is the center elctrode core silver across the bottom or just on the outside edge and darker to black in the center? I am sorry but i cant see the detail in the pics but they look lean to me.

The ground straps are a little gray on mag/pto and the center ic more whiteon bend of strap. Also the center electrode is silver across the whole piece. thanks Rich. Sorry about the pics.

what jets are in the carbs? you need alot more fuel in all 3, so something is changed somewhere, you got it changed most likely. its very lean.

I have 142.5 all the way across. Has been running this way for 6 years. Not sure why it is doing this now. tried to find an air leak but have not so far. Last year i replaced the crank do to a bearing going bad. Put in all new seals and gaskets. It was rode about 300 miles before we put it away for the summer. I do not have access to a leak down tester so i tried to spray around the gaskets, seals and carb boots with carb cleaner. Nothing happened. Am i headed in the right direction on this you think? Thanks again Rich.

ya as best as I can read your doing the right things, the hard thing about diagnosing something over the computer is I cant see it, hear it, touch it so it hard on this end, how about jetting it up, throw in bigger mains and where are the needles set at?

All 3 plugs look close so I would rule out a crank seal or airleak, is the airbox gutted out?

Ok what took the crank bearings out????? Bad pump???? Also couldn't the inner crank seals be bad and leaning all 3 out?(not too familiar with these only had poo and doos and kittys apart so far), rare but he had the engine apart....what other mods do you have???

What about a sheared flywheel key? You may have some detonation going on there. The sheared key will move the timing in the motor, thus causing the condition that you have. You mention gray, which could be detonation. Have you checked piston wash?

The sled is all stock accept the jetting. The needles are set in the stock position. The air box is not gutted. I have the jets left over from my srx that i had and i am in the process of putting those in. I will check the flywheel key. The 97 sx700's were known to lose the pto crank bearing. The 98 model has a differnt set up.The sled has 8000+ miles on it. I put new rings in at the same time as the crank. Thanks for all the help everyone,Rich.

One thing i remebered was when we got it out in the fall was that it backfired real bad when we started it.. I will still have to check the flywheel key today and i put the bigger jets in yesterday but did not get a chance to ride it yet. Thanks Rich.

I got to ride it with 152.5 main jets in it and the plugs are still white. Took it down a good long straight trail and opened it up and it pulled good and clean with no spitting as to act like it was running rich. Stopped and checked the plugs and they were white. I think i will pull the motor out and split the cases and redue the bonding material and replace all the gaskets. Thanks everyone for their help on this. I will let you know what i find out, Rich.

I got the motor pulled out this morning and when i tipped the motor to pull it some milky colored liquid came out of the port for the oil pump. Set it on the bench tipped back and some more came out. i will pull the motor the rest of the way down tonite. any ideas on what that liquid was and where it might have come from? Thanks Rich.

You didn't put antifreeze in the oil tank, did you? I'm surprised it didn't seize with milky oil!! It sounds as if the plugs were getting washed off with coolant.

Nope, no antifreeze in the oil tank. Know of a sled that happend to though that was bought from a dealer. Not good. Sounds like it to me on the water washing off the plugs though. Will dig into it farther and let you know. Thanks guys, Rich.

my 97 was doin the exact same thing ..a grayish charcoal color on all the plugs.....come to findout my spark plug caps were bad, also lost a lil rpm, replaced with some ngk's and got my rpm back and plugs look a lil better.
