Ihave an 02 viper and the water pump was leaking right by the bolt under the pump. I installed a new seal and it is still leaking, is or are there any other resolutions to this, any help would be great.

There is a mechanical seal that needs replacing, motor has to come out to do
it right.
Number 4; $10.78
it right.

Just a question but how did you come up with that? What significance does this seal have? Thanx

there is a mechanical seal(#4 on diagram) inside the water pump which is what is leaking ...the coolant gets through this seal and leaks out a weep hole at the bottom of the motor....unfortunately the easiest way to repair this is to take the motor out, take the water pump cover off, remove the impeller and then pry out the seal which is at the base of the impeller shaft and replace. Just be carefull when prying the seal out that you don't damage the seat of the seal. I carefully pryed an edge of the seal then grabbed the edge of it with a set of needle nose and pulled out the seal. there are also two bearings i believe, (#5 and #2 in diagram) which you may want to replace while you are in there but not mandatory.
If you do a search on water pump or water seal you will find some good info with pics to help you. it sounds more difficult than it actually is..

I was under the impression that there is a weep hole just behind it to drain out on the belly pan...or you getting any air in the reservoir...make sure its not from anything else like carb heaters, overflow tub, or do you actually see it from a bolt...theres a brain bolt with, I believe a copper washer...
I didn't get to read all the replies, but failure of the mechanical seal is very common on Vipers. It also tends to look like its the housing because the coolant comes out the purpose built weep hole. Don't be fooled, its the mechanical seal. Everyone says you need to remove the motor, but I doubt the dealers do when they do it... That said I had my motor out when I did mine, so I don't know. Change the mechanical seal!

The thing of it is is like viperino said if not careful you can damage the seat of the seal when prying it out, you just couldn't do a precise job with the motor in, i would remove it.

just did pump on my 02MM700 this fall (similar to Viper pump).... replaced shaft, expensive washer, impellor, mechanical seal, oil seal, circlip, bearing and o-ring....
culprit was the shaft... mechanical seal was fine... splines on shaft were getting sloppy and impellor would dance on shaft end...
all else had to be removed to get the shaft out... just glad I took another member's advice and didn't overlook it since it would be leaking right now, once again...
if you can, try a new impellor from a dealer onto your old shaft, if it wobbles, consider the shaft as a culprit... it will fit tight on a new shaft...
(didn't remove engine completely.. marked with a scriber, then removed 4 motor mounts and hoisted engine up high enough to work on... lifted just high enough so not to disconnect oil lines to bottom end)...
tj..

When I did mine on my SX I didn't remove the engine.
hey tl when you replaced the waterpump shaft,im guessing you didnt have to split the cases right.im having a similiar issue on freshly rebuilt engine and was curious.thanks

NO.. didn't have to split the cases... had to remove impellor, mechanical seal, oil seal, circlip, bearing and then the shaft required gentle turning while pulling straight out.... when re-installing, be sure the shaft is inserted correctly so that it fits into the oil pump correctly... takes a few trys but you'll eventually line up the pump with the shaft.... (the splines on the shaft fit with the gear on the crank)....
I was working on an 02MM700 but from the fiche, viper pump looks similar...

I just did my seal and the shop only had to lift the front of the motor a little to get a better "view" of the area. When you change the seal also change the little coated washer (#9 I think??). This washer prevents antifreeze from leaking past the splines on the watherpump shaft. My washer was also part of my problem as rthe coating was torn. All fixed now!!!
Just so you know, the weep hole is shared by the water pump and the crankcase. If the oil seal on the other end of the waterpump shaft starts to leak, you will/can get oil weeping from the hole.

there was a service bulletin on all yamaha triples regarding this problem. the fix is to replace the mech . seal, copper washer and place loctite on the splines of the water pump shaft to take care of any wear on the splines. replacement of the shaft is most likely not nessesary. your local yamaha dealer should be able to show you this and are the best ones to do the job. the seal is very fragile and if they screw it up they will fix it again. i would take it to the dealer and let them do it. cost me $130-150 bucks. but well worth it . very easy to damage the seal when replacing it and you will not know until you have it back together!then you have to start all over again with new parts. $$$$!!!.

I see you're from Manitoba.. which shop did it for you?... that price looks reasonable.. had I known, I too would have let the dealer do it... I just thought I'd have to mortgage my house... tj
Huummmm
I have seen a couple of these leaks and have fixed two of them by removing the impellar, cleaning everything up, then lock-titing the impellar and bolt back in. That is all I did and they stopped leaking. Don't ask me to explain it, this is what I was told to do by a reputable yamaha mechanic and it worked.

I recently purchased a full gasket set from Winderosa and those water pump parts were not included. Are these only OEM parts?

the water pump seal is a oem only seal as far as i know, comes as a little kit. i was at work today and saw the service bulletin in a 04' bulletin manual and read something about the splines on the shafts going out of spec. and leaking, however i hadn't changed one yet with 15k kms. colorado, the part number for the seal is 11h124381000 and the washer is 902100600100
