Working on a 98 srx while he was riding lights and gauges were cutting out.Went to his house 3 days latter to pickup his sled lights were working fine.Brought the sled to my place pulled wire harness under motor pulled off all the old tape cleaned all the glue and oil residue from wires checked for chafing all good retapped wires and put on a plastic wire cover.did find wires coming from mag rubbing on removable plate over recoil. It actually wore 3small groves in inthe plate. The wires were wore but not threw.Tapped up wires and routed them away from the plate.Icant find anything else any other ideas lights are still working snow is melting right now cant test ride.
Rear tail lamp some times they rot out the pig tail or under the seat & tank, I had a rub through under the fuel take...the wire feeds to the rear lamp....

it could be the wiring under the engine

he tryed that already..
3 things to check:wires under motor,dune.
connection between mag and wires? I´ve seen bad solderings between stator and wires.
and the stop wires to the ignition lock and the stop button? I´ve seen rubbing threw wires at steering handle.
hope that you will find the problem.

I have seen the stator plastic plugs melt from wiring harness failure and you might want to look at the stator wires going into the engine, they also can wear right at the boot joint, check the plugs by removing them and look for melted plastic and loose fitting connectors down there.
okay this happened to my sled one weekend. Running fine and everything then one time I went to start it up it had no head lights or gauge lights but brake light worked. The guys on here told me to pull the little plugs that are by your left boot, one blue plug, one white plug. Not sure what the plugs are for. Told me to pull them in the house and set them on a heat register to dry them out. Put them back in and I have not had the problem again. The weekend it happened the sled was out side for the whole week and it happened the last day.

Well pulled off stater and mag looked over wires everything looks good.Cleaned up rotor had a black film on it and reasembled. It must of been the wirers rubbing on plate that i rerouted. They werent worn threw but may be enough to make it act up.We will half to wait for more snow to see.

Mrviper would the rectifier regulator cause this problem! If so how do i check it.I have specks for 2000 and up but nothing for99 down.
hmmmm, cutting in and out, I have not seen one do that but that doesnt mean it cant happen, with electrical all kind of weird things can transpire.
You could check the voltage of it tehn load the system with your highbeam headlights on and brake light on and check. I will have a look at my tech update books and see if they have a test on it, will get back to you on this.
you checked the tail light harness under the gastank?, took it out from under the tank and looked?, have seen blinking light syndrom from that before.

Finally got a litle bit of snow my freind got his sled out and the lights started acting up again it .But only when the heated visor on his helmet was pluged in.
then the heated shield must be wired into the wrong source, you have to go off the brown wire off key switch on a 98

I'm having the same trouble with my 97 700sx. I've rode a couple times around home (through a couple water holes). The sled has been stored in an enclosed trailer. Two days ago the weather changed from 40 degF to 10 degF in a matter of 30 minutes. It has been bitter cold since. Last night I was loading my sled into a friend's trailer in preperation for a trip to Kewenaw and my lights were acting up. It seems to be worse when cold. As the sled warms up it seems to quit cutting out as much. I remember the lights were acting up a little bit last year while in the U.P. (It was bitter cold then too).
It sounds to me like there is frozen moisture somewhere like others were saying in this thread. My question is: Where is it?
