I think the next to last photo in post #15 really shows the layers of crud.... SHould I have gotten them down to metal? What more should I have tried?

you did ok,could have used a razor blade gently on the realdnale said:

Might as well put the rings in and start running amsoil. Check to see if pistons are out of spec too. Maybe some new wrist pin bearngs in the recipe will help.
Run the amsoil and do the rebuild. After the season you should be able to take the valves out and clean them shiny sooo much easier.

i've already got the rings. I was debating about tearing into it now or waiting until the season was over. I want to ride this week up north. Maybe I'll ride it this week and bring it back to finish it up. The wife wants me done working on sleds. Considering about a week ago I put my old xt back together and sold it.
