Where to begin?

I have a problem that I need help with but I'm afraid it might be hard to describe and can have several possible answers. I guess I'm looking for some advice on where to begin. Maybe somebody will read this that has had the same thing happen to them in the past.

2000 SRX 700 w/ 3700 miles.............

Recent work done on it:

1) fixed wire harness rub through.
2) cleaned carbs.
3) cleaned power valves.

(new track and bearings probably 1000 - 1500 miles ago)

After doing the above 3, she was running like a champ. 150 miles or so later I noticed a small knocking sound when slowing down or coming to a stop. Now, 50 - 75 miles later it's become a large knocking sound.

It's coming from under the hood. I DON'T THINK it coming from inside the motor, but I could be wrong. Performance wise, it still seems to be running normal.

As I layed in bed last night after my ride I was trying to think about how I could describe the noise. Don't laugh but this is the best I came up with.......

Imagine a 4" - 5" cube box made out of 1/4" medal. Now, put another small cube box inside of it and shake it around at 4500-5000 RPMs.

At first it was noticable when I was slowing down coming to a stop, or going around 10 - 15 MPH and let off the trottle to a coast. Basically when it was around 4500 RPMs. Now, it's getting louder and I can hear it at higher speeds and higher RPMs.

At first I thought it was a bearing. Checked the main drive shaft on the clutch side and it looks fine. Then as I was driving last night and it became worse I thought that it just had to be a power valve knocking around. We got home kind of late so all I did was pull the power valves out thinking I would find a broken cable or something. They all seem fine.

I did not disconnect servo motor or mess with any cable adjustments when I cleaned the power valves. This was the first time I cleaned the valves myself. Could I have messed something up adjustment wise?

When I get a chance to work on it my thought is to throw her on the side and pull off the cover that houses the track drive chain and take a look in there.

Other possibilities? Something broke loose and inside one of the pipes? I'm just really at a lose because I thought for sure I would find something wrong with one of the power valves.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Clutches SEEM fine to me.

I'm an accountant by day and a practicing mechanic by night so I could be wrong! LOL

primary

Primary clutch - Its most likely at the RPM when the clutch is not under load any longer. Put the rear of your sled on a stand or hang from tie down in your garage. Remove clutch cover.
CAUTION: Dont get inline with the clutchs because broken parts flying off a clutch would be real bad. Run the track and you should be able to determine source of the noise.

If its not the primary, I would definitely check out the chain case like you planned. Do you adjust your chain case tension to finger tight every season? Could possibly be a loose chain or something else going on in there.

Is the sound there when you have the hood up...could be one of the cable straps or even a heat shield in the exhausts...make sure you still have the magnet on the dipstick...

Yes, you can drive slow with the hood up and the sound is still there.

Will check the dipstick. Doubt that that is it but I'm looking to check any possibility.

Thanks.

Does the sound seem to get faster with speed? If it's studded, maybe a stud is ripping out of the track and hitting the tunnel or up in front by the cooler?

Just a thought.

No, the sound does not get faster. Track is not studded.

i found that the bolt had backed out from the limiter behind the secondary, rubbing against the secondary clutch.... you could check it just for the hell of it, could be whats wrong

check all these previously listed ideas. Heres another something I found to make a knocking noise on some sleds, simply grab the brake rotor and rock it back an forth, see if the hub is loose on the jackshaft, need not be running or brake applied, just grab the rotor with your fingers and see if you can shake it back and forth(front to back of sled), I had a srx here with same clunking/knocking noise and the hub was worn in the keyway of the brake rotor.

Well, we found the problem. It was a loose heat exchanger protector. I can't believe how deceiving it was on where the sound was coming from. Even after having it tied up and running it still sounded like it was coming from under the hood. Not until my buddy layed on the ground did we find it.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions!!

I'm such an idiot.
