steering shaft snapped

i was side hilling on shalow snow and found my self in the snow.... my bars broke right off at the bottom plate and steering shaft.... so i just welded the in side and out side where the plate connect's to the shaft and went on a mission to side hill for as long as i could... is this common on the 98 srx sled and is that a good way to fix it.... it didn't snap this time.... i have a 5inch pivot risor to
 
there was a recall on this. You need to contact your dealer........BOL
You need to put a sleeve over the shaft.
 
ya this happened to my 98 srx as well the newer shafts from yamaha were beefed up. i just welded mine with a steel tube insert in it for extra strength.
 
It happen last year to my 99 sx 600 after jumping a small ditch...I weld it and put a solid steel pipe inside and weld it as well..I heard is comon if you put a riser in it I had a 2 incher.....

didnt you roll it earlier this week or last week that might have weakened it. i thought the shaft would give out right below the clamp.

you mean they will replace the jaft even if the sled is old and no warranty left...I can't believe that....Nick

Is the 99 vmax 600 sx included on that recall

i talked to the yammie dealer today and they said the spindles where the only recall that they could see on the steering part ..... if any one could give me a link to see all the recalls that would be great.... i don't even know where to look
 
mine snaped on my 97 vmax. i used like a 3/4 inch or 5/8s bolt welded it to the plate then hammered it into the saft welded it on the bottom and then drilled some holes and plug welded it. still have it and alot stronger then stock. too bad the rest of the sled is in a million pices i kinda miss it wish i didnt hit that tree lol

I have read about broken shafts before. I am only responding regarding snomoguy's post of a recall, I do not know if there was one. But if there is a safety recall, it will always be in effect, it has nothing to do with a warranty. I have worked for several OEM dealerships, including Yamaha. If there is a chance of injury or death, that will not change when the warranty period is over.

SHY: Call Yamaha customer service and ask them. The number is probably on this site somewhere. Have your serial number ready.
