So I posted originally in the "general Yamaha discussion" forum and then realized there was an actual spot for viper related questions....

I am having problems with some sort of electrical issue with my Viper sled. When I touch the brakes the gauges go out and the sled starts to cut out. The headlight is also very dull. It runs best when on low beams however. Does anyone know if this is simply a ground? And if so perhaps where would I start to look? Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have just gotten about 2 feet of snow up here in Northern Wisconsin over the last few weeks.

check the wires that go to your tail lights...first pull your bulbs out...see if it still does it...some pigtails rot out grounding the feed…on mine it was a wire under the gas tank…also do a search on this, there’s sometimes wire rub through under the engine…but not as conmen on the vipers…

thanks for the information. First thing tomorrow I'm going to take a look at it. I had expected something going on under the gas tank but wasnt quite sure. Don't have a warm shop to do any work here so I wanted to save as much time as possible! Any other ideas in the meantime would be helpful just in case.

Thanks again!

wiring harness rubbed thru either under the engine,(most common) or under the gastank.

I had wire rub through under my engine and also the harness rubbed through on carb hose clamp...on my '02 viper

I checked my 02 Viper a few years ago after I heard about the harness under the engine. I caught mine in time but it was starting to go through the wire insulation. I taped it up good and put a plastic sleeve over the entire area to help prevent this.

I read about similar problems as you with the guages and lights.

thanks for the help so far. i need to get to the engine. everything under the tank and seat seemd fine. the only other place has to be under the engine. convenient!!

thanks again
