81 Srx

No. Look about the same from the bottom. There was never an advantage to having a shorter intake tract that we could tell on the dyno or racing.
 
On a piston port motor the shorter the intake lenght the stonger the signal is recived from the carb. It's even in the 70's yamaha grass drag manuals and Aaen does it to all the wild port jobs, it was and is very common mod to these engines.

Pic is of 78 SSR after hitting the bales at the Rock Rapids vintage oval races in Iowa over the holidays. It has a Delaughter 81SRX engine in it and I guess was very strong down the straights but had some handling issues. Ended up breaking a front suspension bolt which but him in the bales. The 81 engine is a formitable powerplant in the right hands and it will be interesting to see how this sled does against the Rotax sleds that have been dominating some of this type of vintage racing as of late.

Do you think an all origanal 81 SRX with matching numbers will ever end up being sought after like the 76 and 77 SRX's are today.

I hope not, the sleds that are the most sought after are too expensive to buy and too hard to find parts for because people start hoarding the stuff. The ones that are cheaper to buy and easier to get parts for are alot more fun and you can actually ride them and use them for what they were designed for, instead of just sitting around looking pretty.

YES!!!!!! BUT THE PROBLEM THE 81 SRX HAS IS ITS ALWAYS CONFUSED WITH THE 1982. I CAN,T COUNT THE VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE SHOWS WHERE WE WILL HAVE A 1981 SRX ON DISPLAY AND PEOPLE COME OVER AND SAY '' AIN,T THAT THE ONE YAMAHA NEVER LET OUT '' !! 3:16 (yammie tony)

I've got an 8M6-002803. The book says starting # was 8M6-000101 so there were at least 2703 of them made untill we get a higher #.

mine is #002168.

I sure hope these things become worth something soon, they are a 1 year only machine and alot were destroyed.
 
Yeah. I know where there is at least 7 wrecked 81's. They're pretty bare and there's no engines, but I'd still like to grab them all. Too many toys and projects though! G.
 
engine probs

hey guys this was my dads sled...i have an 81 srx 440, but i can get it to run...but whenever i giver a little it bogs out and dies...any ideas? help? thanks
 
I had an '81 SRX back in the day. Strong runner when it ran. We had problems with it burning down until Forest Lake Motors Sports welded bridges in the exhaust ports. The ports were so big that the pistons would tip and the skirts would slap the cylinder wall or the wrings would catch the top of the port. After the bridges were put in, it never burned down again. The old man took it to the Black Hills in S.D. and proceeded to run it up the trunk of a huge white pine. He somehow took branches off the main trunk 15ft up the tree. We straightened it out as best we could but it was never the same after that.

Tony.. when you find out when that is coming out please let me know, would love to read it.. Why is it that for a sled that was so bad and nobody wanted that you see more of these around then any of the other 81 muscle sleds? Maybe thay weren't so bad after all.. Love those 81's!!

i bought a new 81 srx, first thing i did was get ride of the big ugly clutch they put on them and bought a comet for it , clutched it moved clutch engage ment to 4500 rpm, pulled the jugs off it and did some porting to it . i did a lot of sled runs on the river against 9500 blizzards , and 6000 eltiger cats , never was beat got to the 1200 km mark then started having crank issues, yami dealer called it in for a update on the crank but never did change it as i fouind out later. it had a bent crank and would burn down all the time.
 
I just bought another 81, this one only has 625 original miles on it. Gonna race one of them on the oval this year for fun.
