Use yamaha pistons only.
If you need pistons, Do not sell your motor and yourself short and by wisecos thinking youll save a buck or 2. They dont last as long or perform near as good as OEM. I would automatically be expecting to invest in new rings by your findings. If you have a cylinder that burned down, take the time to find out what caused it and eliminate that problem.

hey one cylinder is down on compression dont forget to find out why this happened carbs water in fuel etc find out why or it will do it again
No, not really much to be gained by boring unless you buy a big bore kit. I think if you bore it, you cannot get yamaha pistons for it. It will cost you alot more to get it bored and finding pistons for it. If your cylinder is trashed, buy a used one. Better yet, the 97 and up 500 twin cylinders have much much better porting in them. More HP to be gained that way. I think you can peel the head gasket on these motors when your rebuilt it for more compression. Friend of mine had his 600 twin rebuilt and was told that the thickness of the head gaskets is rediculous. Just have to run premium if you do that.

No don't bore it, just look for used cyl's and put her back together.

I started out 4 yrs ago tearing into my own. All the forums have guys that have done this and will be glad to help. 4 yrs later my garage is full of other peoples sleds getting fixed because they are old and to costly to go to the dealer. I still use the forums for help sometimes. They wonder how I do it sometimes because there is nuts and bolts everywhere on the running boards, parts here and there and in the end I have no parts left over, all the bolts in the right place and it fires up 
. I basicly work in a orginized mess is what I call it. It works for me and not others. Once you tear into it you will see that it is not that bad. When it comes to wiring problems and stuff then it gets fun, but somebody on here has been there and done that also. Dig in and get to know your sled a little better.
