Need some help. I have a 96 Vmax-600XT and I am only getting 7 miles per gallon. Can anyone tell me what I can do to get better gas mileage?

there not going to get the best to start with, when i was running '95 600
back in the day i could get 10-11+ thats about it.

but you could try doing a tune up clean carbs check float height, sync, set to spec., check and make sure clutches are working properly and that you don't have any wore out parts binding or hanging up, if you have aggressive clutching that will kill ya too..

check track tension overly tight track is no good, ski alignment, etc,etc..

also if your engine is tiered that don't help either being down on power.

It has about 4000 miles on it and the track is adjusted with no worn out parts. I am not sure about the clutch and secondary clutch. Would like to get 10 miles per gallon. I just bought the sled this past summer so I really don't know that much about it. I bought the same sled for my son and his get's a little better mileage about 9 miles per gallon. Thanks for the help.

When you say drop the needle a notch would that be to raise the clip so the needle will drop. Thanks for the information. I will look at the needles when the season is done. I will go threw the sled this summer. I guess i will have to live with 7 miles per gallon and enjoy the riding. Would clogged or dirty carbs give me poor gas mileage? Again thanks for the help.

Yes, if the carbs are dirty they will cause you some problems, i would definetly recommend tearing them apart and cleaning them as you never know when they were cleaned last. You can do a visual inspecion of the clutch rollers and ramps and see if they are getting worn out at all. This is all stuff i would personally do asap as you don't want to take the chance with a plugged carb, stuck float etc...

For the summer, make sure to check out all the shafts on the suspension I found out the hardway and its not cheap, The bushing are thin in spots and can wear out without you knowing it.

I avg about 10-14mpg on my 96 XT w/ pipes but i am nice to it usualy. ;)

pup55, i owned a 94 600 twin and dropped the needle by 1/2 a shim there is a white washer and i moved the needle down and placed the washer above, i think this is called a half move to make the mid range run leaner this resulted in about a 2 mpg difference, i wished i had done this when i purchased the sled but was worried i would screw something up, it took about 30 minutes to do and i couldn't believe the results 10-12 mpg...just keep an eye on your plug color..i remember my plugs were always black because the thing is jetted pig rich from the factory - experiment and maybe change your baseline jetting as well.....CP

My 2001 phazer was getting terrible mileage and it turned out to be float height settings. The previous owner had them bent all the way down. The sled ran good too.

i have 2 of those sleds! what i ahve done to them is this.....your stock jet should be a 152.5... drop that to a 150 main jet! try a thinner head gasket and adjust your oil pump control down! you can crank that thing all the way down and still be pumoing more oil than needed!also, check your needle placement! clip should be in #2 position and a spacer on the bottom of that and the other on the top of clip! i was able to get my mileage between 9.5 - 10 mpg but you will probably not see any better than that! as champstar said, check your belt! make sure it is not wore out, if it is down to far in the secondary, it is using to much power too make the sled go! as daman said make sure the carbs are good and clean!
these things never were good on gas but you can get a little more mpg with these simple mods!

I'd basically echo everyone else. You aren't going to get great mileage on it, but you can get better than that. I gained mpg when I went to pipes, I think that had to do with it being clutched better and making a better use of the power on hand.

I didnt get good mileage either until, had the carbs cleaned, clutched it, put plastic skis on, v-force reeds, and I lost about 30 pounds so anything you can do to lighten up that Iron Sled the better...

I have my 95 600 getting between 11-14mpg, depends on temp. I have GYT twin pipes on it and changed clutching to suit the pipes and I'm getting great mileage. I can't complain. I have my clips raised to the #2 spot and no washer underneath.

Thanks guys for the help. I think i will pull the sled in the garage this weekend and start going threw it.Ha Sleddheadd you said to set the oil pump to control down. I assume that means to adjust the oil pump for less oil? I will start by cleaning the carbs and checking the needle setting for the #2 setting. I will buy a new belt and see how it runs. I also just purchased a Yamaha service manual so I can start fine tuning it. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I am just looking for 10 mpg. Like I said before I just bought both sleds for myself and my son, so it is a learning process. I really thank you guys for all the help and information. This is a great site with some great people.
