What is it that makes the twin clutches wear out?

I've read several times on here that the twin clutches after so long are junk and eat rollers and that they should be replaced with a triple clutch. What is it about them that is different than the triple primaries to begin with? My friend has a 97 XTC 600 and I've told him about this and he tried telling me that they're exactly the same anyway. I know they're not though because of the part numbers. I just wondered if someone could tell me what the differences are. Thanks.
 
It is the power pulses & harmonics of the twin engine. Clutches are built the same.
 
they clutches are built the same. the twin motors hit the natural resonacne of the clutches and just cause it to vibrate more then normal and they ware out more quickly.
 
Well if that's what it is is it even worth getting one from a triple? The same thing will happen to those too won't it? I wondered if it was something like what you guys are saying but since everyone says to get one from a triple I thought it had to be something else. But I guess not.
 
ur better off getting one off a tripple cause it most likely wont be worn out as much. that is if ur buying used. if buying new doesnt matter.

I think my buddies with cats only get maybe 2000 miles from their clutches at best from thier twins. All the polaris twins we have owned get good mileage out of the clutches before needing any service. Heck, I have not even had to do anything but clean the clutches on my 00 xc600sp. over 4k on that. The 488 fan has a clutch kit, but only because I souped up the motor, and it had over 12k on it when the speedo cable broke. I have yet to even think about fixing that since it only gets the snot ridden out of it from time to time.

The clutches on our indy500 had to be re done at 3000 miles. There was enough wear on the weights/ pins that they needed it. The xcr600 triple's clutch was upgraded to an EPI kit solely to keep up better with the 2000 600VES. the clutch parts had at least 4k on them when that was done, and they looked to be in great shape. tri[ples sure make clutches last longer.
 
this is just an idea i have been toying with but has any one had some one make them roller bushings out of brass instead of plastic or nylon there made of the next time mine wear out this is what i am going to try. brass is softer than the steel pin that runs through the center of the roller and would be way more durable than nylon. i am curious to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Hmmm......may work,keep us posted..
 
Found some plastic bushings for the old 95 V-max rollers at the hardware store that fit perfect. They all melted right away! Got sick of fixing the stock primary and went with a new Comet. Very happy 600 miles on the Comet so far! Performance is identical to the factory clutch.
 
i got about 2500 miles out of my clutch in my 95 vmax 600 before i had to rebuild it. The rollers were spent.
