What is rattling?

Under the hood on my Mountainmax?
on the right hand side. Seems to be coming from the exhaust/or motor area. Can it be (stupid question I know) something in the motor itself that is rattling? A friend of mine had the mag side tear itself up, I'm hoping that's not it.

My suspects are so far: The long spring that holds the silencer in place, too loose of a chain (even though it should have been tightened by the serviceman)
(how do I distinguish between the two?) Too loose of a track, rattling against the rails.
The rattling arises especially at deacceleration, but also when you jam it. Can a loose spring rattle real much?

Any ideas?
 
Just kidding,could be something inside your recoil.Better check that the chain ain't flopping around inside the case.Is the bolt to the trailing arm coming loose.I lost one once and the arm was flapping.Check also inside the chaincase if the sprockets are coming loose,maybe loose bolt or broken bolt in there.If you are hearing a rattling sound,something is about to let go that is loose somewhere.
 
To check chain simply try to rotate secondary clutch back than forth.Should be tight.Exhast springs dont usally rattle but the pipe cover\clamps will.Front heatexchanger protectors come loose and rattle if you have them,and as said brake roters will rattle when the keyway wears out or the pads are worn.Good luck
 
Just a thought. Apart from the springs that attach the pipes to the exhaust manifolds and silencer, there are other springs from the chassis to two of the pipes (on my SRX700 anyway) that hold the pipes down, and tight against each other and down and clear of the hood. I can see how these can be left out because I had to McGyver a wire to feed the springs through, as they're not reachable by human hands once the pipes are in place,, Not a big deal, just requires some wire and minimal dexterity. Steve.
 
(spring/hook and thin stainless steel cable arrangement) to keep the hood from blowing completely over when you open it...

my own rattling on the pipe drives me crazy... very high pitched rattle (especailly on decelleration)
 
Thanks tj 500 but that's not it. I tried taping them and it still rattled.
I did however find that the long spring holding the silencer was slightly stretched. I'll try to get a new one in there.

You were totally right. Sorry about my other post ruling that out. It was much looser than i thought. The exhaust deflector was just hanging on it's rivets, with the actual deflector banging on the deflector frame that is attached to the bellypan.

I know your getting old and it is hard to bend over and look under bellypan.If you did that firstly,there would be no reason for this silly thread..... :dunno: Is that informative enough for ya!!!.... :o| :rofl: :hide:
 
I looked at it and it didnt seem that loose at first. You're the master of silly posts. :P
