I just purchased a 2002 viper 700 with 1200 miles. The sled is spotless and about 20 years newer than any other sled I have ever owned which leads me to my problem. They are a little more complicated than they used to be. I have a very noticeable ticking noise at idle and low rpm. The sled runs great and really hauls. No problems with performance. I have ruled out that the noise is coming from the motor. It seems to be coming from the power valve. Is this a common noise or an indicaton that they need cleaned? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site.....

power valves don't activate @ idle or low rpm's, is the noise coming from
the servo motor?

why do you say it's coming from the pv's, explain more..

Just by listening, I think I even have it narrowed down to which one it is. I just can't believe its something in the motor. Runs to good. Ran a hard 40 miles just to feel it out. No problems. Do you have any other ideas? Is the servo something I should adjust?

its a semi stuck pv not opening all the way. the cable is getting slack and then pulling back against the pv really quick. making it sound like a tick. i would start with cleaning the so they dont end up pulling through

I am going out to the garage to pull them apart now. I will follow up later. Any other suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Possibily coming from the primary clutch? Check weights, rollers and bushings. I've heard clutches make abit of noise but usually when the motor is just turning off.

I found alot of buildup on the valves, cleaned them and adjusted as described. Still has the noise. I looked the clutch over also and couldn't find anything wrong there. Any other ideas, let me know. The sled runs great, but getting ready for Michigan and don't want any problems.

A pencil wraped with a cloth in carb cleaner works good, the pencil fit's in
the grove like it was made for it..

I just pulled the heads off and the middle piston was tore up pretty bad. I noticed the top of the middle piston was stamped std and the other 2 were not. Any ideas which ones are stock? Bottom ring was also stuck.

Are oil injectors per cylinder? The bearing we pulled out of the middle piston was purple in color, Can I assume this is from getting hot?

The rods have no up and down play, but i did notice a scratch around the bottom of the case that is perfectly in line with the center rod. Could this be from a piece of the piston? I turned it by hand and the rod is not hitting. The rod does not appear to be discolored at all. What would cause just the middle cylinder to malfunction?

well that sucks...i would say the one stamped std IS NOT stock, post up
pic's if you want too for us to see.

no...oil is mixed in the fuel pump then the mixture sent to each carb.

could be, a piece of debris

could be from detonation, like i said post up some pics so we can take a look.

Also where to buy parts, I need them asap. Leaving for Michigan in a couple of weeks and I want to have all the bugs worked out.

Can you explain what you mean by detonation? What causes it?

Can I email you the pics, can't get them uploaded?

you can get detonation from heavily loading the motor with lean jetting,
dirty carbs, wrong jetting/to low of octane gas etc...

part's on line or check in the site vendors area, rich has good customer
service as does port yamaha.

The ones in my hands are the good ones, the one sitting on the cylinder is the damaged one. No damage on top, just the sides.

I did find some melted pieces of piston the manifold. How do the 2 pistons look that are in my hands? Do you think they were all lean or just the one that poofed?

Should I replace all the pistons or just the bad one?
