Removing thermostat?

Removing thermostat and overheating issues.

I was wondering what would happen if i ran my sled without the thermostat. I seem to be having an overheating issue and can't seem to find the problem.

did you try a new thermo?, bleeding the system? water pump belt sliping?

should not have a problem,heat exchangers are all in the tunnle(best spot)
 
I've got a new thermostat. I'm taking the water pump apart now. It doesn't seem to be pumping anything. I just put the engine in this morning. I got the crankcase from my old 93 Exciter ST. The motor burned a hole through a piston last year and now I'm guessing that the motor overheated from the water pump not working.
 
After many frustrating tries, I still can't locate the problem. I've changed water pumps, bled the system, blew air through all the hoses, adjusted the belt and still nothing. The pump just doesn't seem to be pushing any coolant at all through the motor. Any other ideas I could try?
 
After. All the old parts were used except the crank, primary sheeve, crankcase, one piston (which now runs 30 degrees cooler than the other), and rings. Never had a problem before.
 
i installed new pistons and rings in mine at 16000 kilo when i filled the cooling system a jacked front of sled up as high as i could filled it up ran it abit on stand topped upo problems
 
Yeah, my dad said to do the same thing when I called him a little bit ago. I'll give it a shot in the morning. One thing that puzzles me though. When I take the hose off the front of the head and run the motor, shouldn't coolant come out?
 
You took the hose off the front of the head and nothing comes out? Thats because there's nothing in it, or the water pump is just that air bound, you would think that would bleed it but it doesn't, did you bleed it under the seat?
 
i had the same kinda problem on my sled it turned out to be a water pump belt but it could be the thermastat too but both of them are cheap to fix and if i were u i would just replace both of them
 
I bled it under the seat a few times, adjusted the water pump belt, took the housing off the water pump and ran it to see if it was spinning, and nothing. I've lifted the front end up and ran it to try and get any air out and still nothing.
 
It wouldn't think that it would pump anything until the thermostat gets up to proper temp (130 degrees, I think). Pull the thermostat and fill the motor with antifreeze and leave the thermostat out and try it then. If that works then put it back in.
 
I run my 540's without Thermostats. I remove the center valve in the thermostat , it acts simply like it's open and restricts the water flow to allow sufficent cooling. I never worry about stuck thermostats ! Yes, I allow all my sleds to come up to temp before running hard.
