SXR 600 loosing antifreeze.

There is snow but not enough for me . It is full of a lot of dirt and crap. We were going to trailer somewhere this weekend untill I found this problem or symptom.

I would think if you are missing anti freeze and there are no puddles or signs of an external leak then it must be going through the head gasket into the cylinders. Looking at the pics, the mag and center look as if they are getting anti freeze wash. Usually if you are burning anti freeze your plugs will have a grey tinge to them. If you pull your head and you have a bad gasket you should be able to see something.

Plugs are not grey just brown black and no white smoke when running.

If I could figure how to upload videos I could show what it looks and sounds like.

check on line, you can do allot better then that..

or buy a non yamaha gasket kit.

I have used cometic over the years, and like them a lot, although winderosa are fine.

Daman or anybody that has done the gasket mod. Can I use permatex in the tube, no one here has the spray gasket maker. Or would 515 or 518 loctite gasket eliminator work the same. Might just do the mod if I have to open it up.

Is it or is it not a fact that if you're getting antifreeze into your cylinder, you would have so much white smoke that there would be no mistaking you had a problem? I do know I once had a 74 Vette with a cracked head and she let me know it..I know I'm mixing cars and sleds here, but the principles must be the same...No?

Nitris,
Where is Saskatchewan are you. I am just north of Regina and there is plenty to go out for a trouble shooting run out here. And as for the permatex question, I owuld say anything that resists oil, anti freeze and fuel (high tack) would be fine.

I live in Yorkton. Poor conditions but enough to get it really warm and not cool it.

I just did another idle warm up in the garage. I bought a new laser temp gun.( to see how hot the wife gets when she is mad at me)

Here are the stats

Garage 21 c until I couldn't take the smoke any more I opened the door 10 minutes into run. Outside temp is -18 C
Sled was at room temp.
Started sled and 7:38
Shutdown at 7:58

I shot the temp on top of the cylinder at the exact same spot for each cylinder. There is a little circle just ahead of the spark plug. All temps were shot at the last minute before shutdown.

Pto 182 F
Cent 184 F
Mag 185 F

T stat on the head was 129 F
Behind pressure cap towards engine was 123 F
Other side of pressure cap about 6 inches away was 104 F

Right heat exchanger sitting on the sled at the front was 93 F
rear exchanger was 90 F in the center
Left heat exchanger at the front was 87 F

Exhause temps were more out on the pto side then the mag and cylinder. The Pto was colder by about 15 degrees but I didn't right the numbers down. This indicates to me that the pto side is a littler richer which relates to the top of the piston in the picture and the mag and center cylinder are running a little leaner..

I figured at 185 F was hot enough. What do you guys think.

Now I will let it cool right down , I have the front elevated 2 feet in the air to see if there is any more air in the system. Overflow bottle was marked before start to see if any more dissapears.

I will report back later.

Just going out now to check the temps again , bleed the air if any, look at the pistons and see if the coolant is down.

I need a fricken laptop this running back and forth to post is getting tiring. Might lose a few pounds to make the sled lighter though.

Plugs are still the same and now all three pistons are black on top and wet and no coolant loss. I was thinking that when I had the carbs off for the reed notch that maybe I spilled some coolant into the reed cage hole removing the carb heating line, but that shouldn't really affect the top. I don't know, seems strange. Need to get it out on the snow I guess.

Still no antifreeze lost after running it again for 20 minutes. Cylinder head temp was 187 F accross the board. Plugs are still black except for the Pto which is still looking new but wet.

Top of the pistons that were somewhat clean are now turning more black brown.

Took the SXR gor a good rip today. No more loss of antifreeze from the bottle. Must have been a air bubble still in the system. Going up north tommorow to see how it is in the deep stuff. Have to check out the heat grips first. They weren't working today, worked fine last year.

Put 55 miles on the SXR yesterday and all was good. Never overheated, antifreeze still up and no sign of leaks any where. Now I just have to get the suspension set up for the little woman. It now has a long track and I tried to set for max transfer to help lift the ski's some in the deeper snow but that doesn't happen. It still likes to keep them planted . When you try and turn then you get ski lift but only one.LOL. I don't know how much I can let out on the limiter with out stabbing the track with the front of the rails. It needs wider ski's for sure. Maybe simmons or something like that.

I have to replace the front shocks and start setting it up again after the swap. Plus reshim the ski rubber to try and fix the darting issues.
