pre-filling carbs?

I was wondering if there's any way to fill up the carb bowls after putting the carbs in the sled instead of pulling it over a bunch of times for the fuel pump to get gas to the motor. I was thinking especially with a new rebuild it wouldn't be such a good thing because even though I oiled everything up in there during assembly it won't be getting any more while it's getting pulled over. I remember when I cleaned the carbs it took awhile for the sled to start, maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I'd be very interested what others have to say. I had the same problem when I went to start my sled this year as I emptied the tank and ran the sled until it was out of fuel. I must have pulled 100 times.
I poured gas down the cylindsers to get it fired up. I had to do this several times. I also tried to pressurize the gas tank by using a compressor.
Other people have suggested a marine primer bulb. Not sure what you think about that.

for a long time I've been thinking of something for this too... the problem I see with a primer bulb is filling the carb bowls with straight gas rather than premix....

sled would run quite a while on a full bowl of fuel and not good if there's no oil mixed...

if there was a way to fill with premix, conveniently, that would be the ticket..

I just mix gas/oil into a little spray bottle and squirt a bit into the cylinder, replace sparkplugs finger tight and start it up. Some times I have to repeat a few times before it will run on it's own. Once it's warmed up I tighten all the sparkplugs.

.

Me too My phazer took 5 pulls, my red head close to a 100 Like 50 the first day....didn't start and tried again the next day both day with full choke 1/2 choke no choke, gas on cilinders, wuaauu it was so hard...but got it...

I presserize my gas tank with my air compressor be very careful, just alittle air goes along way.

Just put pre-mix down the plug holes, it may take 3-4 times doing but it
works good..she'll light right up,,make sure to use pre-mix..

I have a primer on my 99 and it is one of the best things Ive ever done! A couple pumps and shes up and runnin.

On the Viper there is a combined vent line running to the air box. Take a length of fuel line, suck some fuel out of the tank (don't swallow). cover end of fuel line with your thumb until you can push it onto the vent fitting, lift the line up so the fuel runs into the vent lines and into the carb bowls. DO this once or twice and save a whole lot of pulling. Took 5 pulls rather than 25 this year.

Now that I know this works, I'm going to buy a primer bulb and rig up a system so I don't have to risk tasting the fuel. If you have a carb set up where the vents don't join each other then you'll have to do the carbs one by one, and you might have to plug the other two vent lines in the process.

Another option is to pressurize the gas tank either by blowing into it or rigging up some way of pressurizing it. (And don't use 100 psi from your compressor!!!)

pre filling carbs

This is what works for me- fill tank, with plugs removed, use a screwdriver to find BDC for each cylinder , using a squirt bottle give the cylinder at BDC a real good shot of fuel and move to the next cylinder- this allows the fuel to get down to the crank and be pulled up through the transfer ports without fear of flooding. As far as oil is concerned, I always fog the motor in the spring so there is always lots to burn off! With plugs back in, full choke, sled starts on first or secound pull! Like I said works for me!

Bottom Dead Center (BDC) correct, sorry about that! I always drain the tank and carbs in the spring (after fogging motor), its warmer, and makes for less work when the snow starts flying!

I pre primed the motorwith premix just before reinstalling the carbs after cleaning them and it lit on the first pull.

Pull the fuel lines off at the carbs. Premix some 50:1 in a squirt oil can. Get a piece of used, or new, fuel line and insert that line on the carb fitting. Gently squirt the premix 7-8 times into the open end of the extra fuel line now attached to the carb. Do this on all three carbs, replace the fuel lines from the fuel pump and install the clamps. Motor should start with just a couple of pulls with the choke on.

I think I like that idea best, rather than putting fuel in the cylinders. Thanks once again for the help guys!

you guys owe me for this one. the answer is as simple as this. take a propane weed burner torch and place it in the airbox, you may need to unscrew the head of the torch to fit....maybe/maybe not. allow a bit of propane to fill the airbox and pull the rope. I bet it runs in lesss than 2 pulls. the oiler will still oil, and the fuel pump will pick up fuel soon. no muss no fuss.

The oil is injected at the fuel pump. So no fuel=no oil. Idk, probably not a big deal because it will get there pretty quick but just clearing that up for everyone.

if you take the gas cap off, you can actually put your whole face over the hole and pressurize with your mouth - if you are really good you can crank the elec start at the same time. ;)!

Must Be Lucky!!!

WELL GUYS THATS WEIRD YOU ARE HAVING THAT PROBLEM I HAVE DRAINED MY GAS SEVERAL TIMES AND TAKEN OFF MY CARBS TWICE THIS YEAR AND EVERY TIME ITS FIRED RIGHT UP IN AT LEAST THREE PULLS AFTER THERE MUST BE A LOGICAL EXPLANATION!!!!WHO KNOWS MAYBE MY CARBS ARE SET WRONG BUT IT SHOOTS LIKE FIRE ACROSS THE LAKE AND IDLES LIKE A KITTEN :hide:
