clutch exploded! on sxr

My bud was riding up by Houghton Lake last week when his clutch literly exploded out the bottem of his sxr! Nothin left of the primary but pieces. busted the secondary and ripped a hole in the belly under the sheaves. I never seen anything like it b4. How cud somthin like that happen? Anyway lookin for a way to fix it up anyone know a way to seal up the tear in the plastic belly? also need some 8ca's flyweights and a speedo cable. also need a puller( mine is trashed).

Well

It isnt the best looking but take a piece of another belly pan or a piece of aluminum and rivet it on over the hole.That must be what that silly clutch cover is for!
 
There must have been a hair line crack in it somewhere, how many miles
on it, been sreviced at all??
 
Yeah ive seen it before and had it happen to our sx700. Thank god for belt guards. As for the belly pan I would rivet a piece of aluminum on the inside of where it broke or maybe a piece of blue plexi. I guess you could try and find a scrap pan and plastic weld a new peice in there.

cool, but it sucks. My first primary lasted 4800 miles. I bought one on ebay, it made it to 5300 miles. Its always the sliding sheave that cracks. Has any one tried just putting the one sheave in?
 
I had the same thing happen on my SXr and the belt guard might have saved my life!!!! I wasn't wearing a helmet riding around the yard and it blew a hole in my hood and bellypan at about 9000rpms!! AMAZING It literally ripped all the rivets out of the belt guard and launched it out the side...yeah it must have been cracked somewhere
 
Looks to me like someone was driving around with a cracked clutch and it finally threw in the towel. That thing have pipes on it? when you put it back together, take it out and run it, the clutches are most likely very hot, fix the clutching issue, then this won't happen again.

That belly pan side is only like $90 new plus 16 rivets, you can change it as fast as you can fix it.

I been told that it may be caused by running to thin of belts or when a belt blows the clutch will slam together and cause cracks.
 
Primary is something Ill be checking regularly for this very reason. Id much rather take the 5 minutes and remove the belt and look for cracks, than end up with a mess like that under my hood. After the season is all over Ill be taking my belt guards and lining the inside of them with 1/8in. thick rubber, just to be on the safe side. I saw the damage of Topgunn's SX when it happened and my mouth dropped.

Righttt i hope so too.. Well i will check my cluch over anyways i gotta put my hauck cluch kit in that go along with my hauck pipes :D
 
ya, well it is setup very agressive, clutches did get very hot after running for a while . I believe it is because of the 8dn belt. One things for sure, it flat out runs! until it gets hot. its got psi pipes all the typical mods, 8ca's/ 52/42 helix, Ive never seen it get beat by anything under an 800. But now he says he's tired of always messin with the high performance and is modin down abit to get it more trail friendly can't say that i blame him.
