I tore into this today and wondering what might of caused this problem? Also what am I looking at on this fix? $$$$$ and parts wise? I guess I am going to need a whole new top end?

Well the funny thing is it was smoking like crazy tring to get it to the house. piston was very wet. If it leaned out I am not sure how it did that but I am still tring to figure out the lean thing.

Also it does not look like the ring turned but this is all the fauther I got.

Once it leaned out and damaged the piston, you lost compression. Then it would smoke because it would not combust the air/fuel mixture.

Well when do you think it leaned out? top speed, mid, low? I clean my carbs every year with the right adjustments. I moved the needle one clip and that is it. I am just wondering after having this for 3 yrs how this happened?

i seen water due this it have freezes main jet then it goes lean a always install a water elimantor every year they are only 18 dollars hooks to gas cap

Well if I check the carb bowls maybe we got some bad gas? It is just wierd that out of 3 sleds this one went down.

Maybe there is more to it with 7000 miles on it.

Also where did you get these water eliminators at?

i am in the same boat but with my formulaIII

i caught it before it did any SERIOUS damage.

from last weekend.

Carbs are filthy so my guess is they leaned out from being clogged.

time for rebuild....big bore, triple pipes, clutch kit, bigger carbs

That cylinder is salvageable. You can either call millenium Technologies, or U.S chrome and have it fixed, they may even offer one that is already on the shelf. all you need now is a head.

Wow now that is amazing. To me it looks to ugle to fix. I t guess I was wrong. Ya this is my cousins sled and he is deciding on what he wants to do now. I think we might be parting it out but not sure at the moment. I think we are going to work out some kinda deal so he can keep my 98 700. We will see. It is all about the $$$$ as usual.

by looking at this damage what does it cost to get it fixed? Anyone know?

HEY JK!? Here's my find tonite....."95 600 Vmax Dirty carbs... Anyone got parts???

I believe I have a good head off a 98 600 twin. One dome is a little discolered up it never sucked anything through it. It's sitting in a box at a buddy of mine's place. $75 shipped in the states. Sorry no pics as it's not currently at my house.

I just got a head and Two jugs for a 96 600 twin off ebay for 80 shipped 1 good 1 bad jug might wanna start there,

As far as the meltdown I would say clogged carb, may not be be clogged anymore if you kept running after it started to burn down. Check the gas, filter etc, many things could have happened did you see any traces on the gasket to indicate a leaky head gasket.

Cost
2 Pistons and rings 89 ea (wiseco)
Gasket set (topend) 45

The others will be the big cost so I would check ebay or the classifieds and see what extra parts are around.

Think it found some foreign material and sucked it up, Possible small screw. I can see small thread type indents along with round craters in the head and piston. EVERYTHING on the piston is in tact, rings and ring locators.

sxrbandit, with the skirt being broken would indicate to me that the piston skirt was worn beyond spec from not having the rings changed often enough, the piston does not hold stabilty in the bore and begins to rock back and forth cracking the skirt off, its those peices of skirt that were inhaled in the case up thru the trnasfer ports and on top of the piston.

jk auto, yours looks like a lean burndown, probally asscociated with mid range cruising speeds, this is why both pistons show the signs of slow burning off the piston crown edge, if you leaned out the needles you might have answered your own question as to why if the carbs were indeed clean. Most times if its a wide open burndown the ring will be bent up and melted as the crown is taken away, it becomes red hot, soft , bends and then catches the exh port from the high rpm lean condition.
