My 97 700 sx is running rich on the mag side.It takes about 5 miles of ditch running and the plug is wet. Starts out running great at about 150kms and then after a few miles it will only hit about 120kms.Cleaned the carbs before the season and now took them off to see if I missed anything. All was good as far as I can tell.Tried a few different plugs, no change.
Check compression and Clutch side is 120 middle is 120 and mag side is 130.
Noticed my exhaust gasket at the silencer is leaking alot.Everything else looks good. Revs at 8000 to start and goes down to 7600 at cruise.
Does not stumble at idle but is stumbling at higher rpm's.
Any ideas????????????????

How is jetting? did you compaire to stock spec's??
sled stock??
sled stock??
Never played with jetting. Not sure how to check or what the stock specs would be.
I will should also add that I replaced the cylinder, piston, head and bearings on the crank last year all on the mag side.I sent the crank out to a crank shop to repair it and check the timing.
Bearing failed and was ingested into the cylinder.

Pull carbs and check, then check in tech section for spec..
Well I pulled off the carbs for the third time now (getting really fast at it) and double check every thing. Found nothing out of the ordinary. Checked the reeds and found four stops with hair line cracks in them. Went to the dealer and talked to a tech and he said that it was not bad enough to affect the way the machine performs but to replace them, which I will. Also got an exhaust ring to fix the exhaust leak.
Before I put the carbs back on what is "clip position" and how do I adjust it?
Any thing else I should be looking at before continuing?
Thanx

There is a circlip on the top of the needle with 2 nylon wshers. Depending which groove you put the clip in and whether you put both washer on top or underneath or 1 above and 1 below. You can raise or lower your needle. If both washers are under the clip then the clip position is the groove that it is in. i.e. the clip is in the top most groove and both washers are under the clip then you are in position number 1. Position 2.5 would be the clip in the third groove with one washer over and 1 under. You can look in the tech section for your sled year and model for the stock setup.
Hope this helps.

you need to check your main jets! should be-- 145...143.8.....143.8

witch cylinder does it get its pulse signal for the fuel pump
Well change all four cracked reed stops, checked and rechecked floats, jets, needles, all within spec.Mains are 145 143.8 143.8 New plugs again.
New exhaust ring.
Too windy to try it out tonight . Try it out tommorrow I hope
Just some more info on this problem. The last time I was out it ran and sounded better at 3/4 throttle than at full throttle.

last weekend my buddy kept spitting out a plug on his '97 sx 700 on the pto cylinder. it was the spark plug boot, not making a good connection. put a new boot on and it worked fine. would wind out to 9000rpm @ wot. is that too much? the sled is totally stock.

Yea i saw plug cap do that before they get all black and wont get good connections! DID it to me... i tought it was to rich but it wasnt..
9000 @wot seems to high to me.Was told by a Yami tech it should cruise at around 8400rpm

9000 is too high unless you are running pipes. It should be 8400 at wot.
shift out rpm is 8300 for a 97 sx!
How do you check the plug caps?patsxr700 said:Yea i saw plug cap do that before they get all black and wont get good connections! DID it to me... i tought it was to rich but it wasnt..
Tried to take one apart.Seem to be glued together.

You check the resistance with an ohm meter they're supposed to read 5000 (5k) ohms.
Do you mearure the resistance from the two leads of the coil pack or do I have to take the wire and boot off??Yama49601 said:You check the resistance with an ohm meter they're supposed to read 5000 (5k) ohms.

take the boot/end off and measure its resistance.....5k also it screws off. You'll see once it comes apart...if it is bad I'd replace all 3...I use the NGK ones, cheap and reliable.

I had a similar prob with my vmax 700. There is a low speed coil and high speed coil. The high speed was shot giving me the same symptoms as your machine. It idled fine and seem to run fine but she wasnt all there I could only get about 120 out of her. Be careful, running like that caused me to blow the ignition box. also 9000 is too high, it should wind out when you crack it to about 8700 and settle down to 8400 -8500.

So if I understand you correctly my stator may be on its way out?
