My friend bought a '97 SX. After taking a good look at it we noticed that the Mag. Bellhousing was missing a chunk right where the wiring harness mounts. The very top has a crack ending at the recoil. The front of the bellhousing also has a very large crack. The previous owner said that he never noticed it. The only way I could think of this kind of damage would be if the sled was in an accident but this one shows no sign of such an accident. Anyone hear of the bellhousings cracking on the old '97's?

Yes, I had a bell housing break on mine last winter, the bolts holding the wiring to the case had come loose and got in the recoil cup and destroyed both top and bottom crankcase halves, had them welded, put back together with locktite, no problems yet.

That could have been it

The possability of something coming loose crossed my mind but I wouldn't have thought of the bolts for the wiring harness. We thought of removing it and having it welded. Did you have to split the case? I was just going to remove the flywheel and ignition and have it welded.

The cup that the dogs on the recoil pull rope engage with came apart. Seen it a couple times. Does exactly what you describe.

Had that happen to mine also. the recoil bolts went ....had it welded back together 3 years ago and its been fine since. Just be careful when welding, cause they melted the seal on the mag side which caused me some extra grief.

Seal Replacement

Next week we'll be pulling the engine and having it welded. If the seal gets damaged is it possable to replace it without splitting the case?

dont think so...have to split the case to do the seal...just make your welder is aware of the seal, it shouldnt be a problem ...

The easiest way I have found to replace the seal is to flip the motor upside down and remove the case bolts and pull the crankshaft out just enough to slide a new seal on , line up the pins and put on new crankcase sealant (I use 1101), retorque bolts install motor, ride sled.

Engine Welded

We removed the engine, found the missing pieces. $43.00 to the welder, looks like he did a real good job. He said not to worry about seal, Tig welder. Looks like something got into recoil, recoil got into bell houising, bell housing couldn't take the pressure.

No time and too cold to re-assemble right now. I'll post back on how it runs.
